In the book The New Science of Learning how to learn in harmony with your brain by Terry Doyle and Todd Zakrajsek talks the ways in which people can improve their learning. Also ways to improve the way peoples brains works. When I first started to read this book I couldn’t fully get in to it like other book. For the main reason I not a fan of science book. But as I continue to read I started to make connection and grew to like the book. The reason that I did like the book was all the knowledge that was gain can be used for success throughout my college years. Personally I felt there were three concepts that I felt that will improve my learning is mindset, exercise and using all my sense. With these concepts I will improve throughout the duration …show more content…
The things in the book that really interested was in chapter 3 exercise and learning. But to find that in chapter 3 BDNF (brain- derived neurotrophic factor) produce proteins for the never cells, also serves as a fertilizer for your brains cells, keep them functioning and promotes growth of new neurons. BDNF improves learning on a cellular level because with a higher level of this it can cause the brain to make better and new connections between the brain cells. This protein makes it easier to learn. The only way to get BDNF is by exercising (Doyle and Zakrajsek 32-33). Also that in chapter 3 it stated “Exercise increases the production of three important neurochemicals that are involved in learning: serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine” (Doyle and Zakrajsek. 32-33). Although when thinking about the effects of exercise has on the brain and learning, it made me think of it one habit I grew to have in high school. That habit was shaking my leg and chewing gum to stay focus in class. I actually still do that to this day and it works because I’m very alert in my classes. However, I never knew all the affect that exercise has in my education. Which has made me change my way and I am currently now do yoga every other day and other exercises to help my brain produces the neurochemical to …show more content…
Not only that but the way to improve a person’s learning and the ways to help your brain be prepared for learning. After reading this book there were certain concepts that I found can improve my learning are exercising, mindset and using my senses during learning. The reason that I feel that exercise would improve my education is because when exercising the brain produces neurochemicals that can improve my learning. But I have found that it does make a different in my education because when I started to exercise more, and I found that I improved slightly in classes and focused more in classes. Secondly mindset is also important in my learning because can affect people’s learning. Personally I felt that mindset did affect me in middle school and high school. In middle school I had a fixed mindset and in high school I had growth mindset. With this growth mindset I was able to accomplish more and learned from my mistake. With a growth mindset you are able to learn from mistakes, yet able to work through challenges and aren’t pessimist like fixed mindset. The last concept that is will improve my education for the best is using multisensory learning. With multisensory learning I would more likely retain the information and recall later. Which will help when it comes to test and writing my paper
The mind improves as a student by the data we put in it and with this new innovation everything is only a click away. The brain works by the data we put in it and in the event that we barely put any data in it, wouldn't influence us to shrewd. Carr gives cases of creators, how they were previously and how they are currently. How they could have perused for a considerable length of reading and now they can't. They ended up noticeably apathetic.
There are many differences for me between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. First, I think having a growth mindset means that you are willing put in the time and dedication to do something. Then having a fixed mindset to me means that if something is challenging you give up and quit. In addition, having a growth mindset means you want to learn new things even if you know they are challenging. At my job this affects me a ton.
There are two known mindsets, a fixed mindset, and a growth mindset. The two may sound similar, but they are quite different. A growth mindset is a good mindset; it allows you to believe in yourself, it lets you try new things, and it helps you never give up. On the other hand there is the fixed mindset; this mindset is one that everyone has on some part or aspect of their life. A fixed mindset, as it sounds, makes your thoughts stay fixed about something; for example if someone is not good at math they might say that they are not a math person.
” People sometimes need motivation even though they are doing their best they can. People that tell themselves that they have the ability to do so isn’t always enough motivation. Even when you learn something new that really doesn’t matter to you, your brain still adds it to your brain. “ Many reported picturing their neurons forming new connections as they studied and learned.”
The growth mindset believes that their potential intelligence comes from learning, while the fixed mindset thinks they only have a certain amount of intelligence. Along with their differences in learning, these students also have a difference in school priorities. The students with the fixed mindset only cared how smart they would appear and turned down opportunities that were critical to their success. Students with the growth mindset thought about their efforts, and when they work harder it will show in their abilities and accomplishments. I agree with this because everyone will react differently to a setback, especially if they already react differently to education.
Educational Self-Analysis As students the people who we surround ourselves with have a profound effect with our motivational level. Our surroundings can emotionally impact our life for the better or worse. By reading the article “Brainology” by Carol Dweck has also showed me the mindset I have and reflect on the way I view education. like most Parents, my Parents want to see me succeed in school since they did not have the chance to do so themselves.
I feel that when you read books or stay off your technology then your brain is going to be functioning and you can learn more that way.¨If only they could have taken her mind along to the dry cleaners emptied the pockets and steamed and cleansed it and reblocked it and brought it
Growth or Fixed Mindset In Carol Dweck’s article “The Perils of Praise and Promise” she explains the difference between a growth and fixed mind-set. Dweck says” In a fixed mind-set, students care first and foremost about how they will be judged; smart or not smart. Repeatedly students with this mind-set reject opportunities to learn if they might make mistakes.
Arthur Schopenhauer, a German Philosopher, argues that reading “robs the mind of all elasticity” (Line 20). Schopenhauer does this by claiming that reading “forces thoughts upon the mind” (Line 5-6) creating a point in which the mind cannot return to where it was before reading. More importantly, this leads to Schopenhauer’s belief that in order to achieve efficient learning, one must think for oneself before proceeding to reading. Furthermore, Schopenhauer claims thinking for oneself will allow you to achieve learning more intimately and purposefully. Schopenhauer’s claim reveals a clear possibility that reading is a hindrance of one’s learning, not an augment.
In conclusion, Khan’s belief is that having a growth mindset is better than having a fixed mindset because your brain, since it is like a muscle, can essentially “grow”.
It is proved by various researches throughout the world that learning is possible when a learner is interested to learn. Learning is a self motivated activity. Everyone learns the knowledge, things and skills related to his or her own areas of interest. W. B. Yeats, an Irish writer says, “Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire.”
Introduction It is very important to study about the development of the human. Because it provides framework to think about human growth, their mental development, and the most important one, ‘their learning’. As a teacher it is very important to study about these theories. Because it have a close relationship with the development of the students and their learning behavior (Michael, 2012) .
Scholars have discussed the connections between learning,
This is why I selected thinking skills as professionalism during my studies. Understanding the behaviors of the brain is a very complex process, and studying the theories and psychology of learning has definitely improved my practice. For example, in many of my classes I will practice philosophy. I do this because I believe it generates a healthy learning environment where the children can begin to question their learning and construct educated arguments. During my teacher training I have worked with a broad range of educational institutions and have even been affected by the new curriculum change.
People with fixed mindsets are afraid of challenges. Setbacks devastate them. Most people with these mindsets were the smart kids in elementary school. Those that got praise daily for how smart they were so they became comfortable and did not learn on how to study to keep learning. These kids realize later on that school does get harder
