My critical discussion paper is focused on an issue of human health resources in Canada presented in “Toward 2020 Vision for Nursing”. This discussion paper will clarify the goals of the paper, evaluate writer’s views on proposed topic from different aspects and provide evidence of current research. Summary The project titled “Toward 2020 Vision for Nursing” is funded by Health Canada through Canadian Nursing Association. Michael Villeneuve and Jane MacDonald are the two principal investigators who conducted this future study to predict future nursing trends and health care system. This paper is prepared on the basis of interviews with Canadian within and beyond nursing as well as extensive literature review. Majority of this paper focused …show more content…
Work nursing leaders from three different nurses such as RNs, LPNs and RPNs are working together on some national project but there is lack of comfortable and productive inter-dependent relationship. The group is not comfortable for a number of reasons. The major reason behind this one is the unequal numbers and powers within these three nurses groups. Due to higher in numbers (246,000) RNs can overrule the needs and concern of LPNs and RPNs. As RPN leaders like Manitoba’s Annette Osted and Marg Synshyn mentioned that context of any dialogue give the importance to the higher number of nurses. I agreed with this comment because if we look at history in any sector voice of larger group get higher priority and bigger group always dominate smaller group. It happened anywhere in the world and it’s just due to the human nature. I am positively inclined with writer ideas of moving collectively ahead to meet the upcoming health human resource demand. They also mentioned that working together will determine the success of nursing for future …show more content…
Global migration will create huge impact in many sectors including health care sectors. Increased health professional mobility is creating huge disparities between developed and least economically developed countries. This will create negative impact on health care system of least developed countries. The expansion of global and regional trade agreement creates potential effect on the supply of health worker. While predicting the demographic diversity of Canada writers mentioned that the huge part of diverse population will come from non European immigration. However immigration not only play a role to create a racial diverse population but it also play an important role to full fill the increasing demand human health resource. (Little, 2007) study explore that majority of Canadian nurses migrate to United States of America due to low number of full time job in Canada resulted from health reform. Upcoming significant shortages of Nurses can be fulfilled by recruiting international nurses and immigration. Similarly, (Forcier, Simoens & Giuffrida, 2004) article mentioned that 25% of physician working in Canada are foreign trained physician. Particulalry Alberta and Saskatchewan have been actively recruiting primary care physicians from South Africa to full fill physician demand in remote areas. It indicates that immigration has great contribution to address the

Week One Discussion Two Response to O 'Neill The addition of nurse leaders in the executive suite is essential in facilitating the perception that nurses are critical decision makers in the health care industry. Furthermore, it is imperative that a formal succession plan is incorporated in organizations to assure strategic leadership, quality care, and operational effectiveness incorporate nursing at the uppermost level of decision and influence (Trepanier & Crenshaw, 2013). The Chief Nurse Executive role is evolving as a tactical authority in acquiring a major influence on our nation’s health care delivery systems and clinical outcomes (Bradley, 2014). As health care shifts and changes, nursing must be at the forefront to assure optimal influence
At this time, the province’s ratio of 72 nurses to every 100,000 people lags behind the nation’s average of 83 nurses to every 100,000 Canadians. As per the Canadian Nurses Association prediction, there is a staggering demand of 60,000 nurses that is needed by the year 2022. With continuously emerging trends in healthcare services, Ontario has become the top dream destination for patient care providers from all over the world. Plenty of job opportunities, best pay packages, government support, continuing education for specialization, cost of living and a rewarding career brings internationally educated nurses to Ontario to shape up their future. According to Garson (2000), the primary issues of healthcare, which were improving access, lowering costs, and improving the quality of care, would accelerate through 2010. Later in 2008, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) along with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation researched the need of radically changing the nursing profession to confront the issues of healthcare (National Academy of Sciences, n.d.). Through these issues the IOM has devised a report suggesting the transformation of nursing practice, education, and leadership. By transforming the nursing profession, the IOM will give way for positive changes in the healthcare system. With this said, the IOM has researched and devised a plan to confront the issues of healthcare, however, how will this impact the nursing profession?
Due to hospital care reaching an all-time high in America, we need nurses now more than ever before. Currently in America, we have an issue with nurses having too many paperwork to fill out. In the article “We Need More Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins argues we need more nurses in the hospital. Nursing shortage has been a common issue throughout the world. Because of this issue others are being affected in many different ways.
Teamwork and collaboration are important to the nursing profession because not only do they improve patient outcomes which in turn decreases length of stay it
Marquis and Huston (2014) discuss how the mark of a good nursing leader is in the ability to inspire and motivate others to action; furthermore, no one leadership style is ideal and may vary according to the situation. The purpose of this paper is to match and explain the nursing leadership theory that is most applicable to solving communication issues, and to explain how legislation and health care policy can impact communication issues in the nursing. Nursing Leadership Theory Nursing leadership is complex and multifaceted and has been cited as a main reason nurses leave their current position (Blake, Leach, Robbins, Pike, & Needleman, 2013). Blake et al.
(Finkelman, et al, 2013). The importance to having all health care members working together in leadership roles is imperative to positive changes within the health care setting. Nurses can give an insight on matters that only a nurse can, and this is an important viewpoint that needs to be included when
Everything is changing so as nurse leaders we must change with this new era of health to live up to the expectation for the good of
As we transition into the new role of NPs, our scope of practice expands. Moreover, as our responsibilities increase, we later become policy makers, and develop autonomy and decision–making skills. NPs are responsible for providing safe nursing care with more specialized knowledge and advanced education. We are also responsible for pursuing continuing education and advanced knowledge to remain competent quality providers, and meet the needs of the community. With our acquired repertoire of skills, it is essential that we utilize them to make informed decisions and collaborate with our community to promote wellness and healthy living.
However, there are certain strategies that can overcome these barriers. For instance, the nurse’s resistance to change and poor communication of objectives is overcome by constant communication of the benefits of this leadership style not just through word, but also through actions until they understand its
As a model, the nursing leader can reduce the autocratic atmosphere and thus, some conflicts of functions. Leaders do things right, accept the challenge of change, focus on goals and have a marked time in the future. They ask why and use strategies based on trajectories towards human potential. On the other hand, NL do things right, opt for continuity, and focus on current structures and procedures. They ask who, what, when, where and how because they use programs to reach the destination and evaluate human performance (Meretoja R, 2002).
They are able to connect, communicate and coordinate across multiple departments, professional opinions and voices, and the daily schedules of patients. Advocating and designing care with the patient and family is a true skills set and cultural attribute that adds tremendously to a culture of safety and patient – centeredness but requires the most able leadership to build these bridges across the many professionals engaged in care. Building this culture is a leadership challenge and there is no one in my experience better able to make these changes than nursing leaders ( Maureen Bisognano, 2009). Nurses should not just be at the bedside or within the nursing community but must be involved as leaders and decision – makers throughout the healthcare system. As Maureen Bisognano (2009) points out, the best nurses are accomplished envoys among different players and interests involved in direct patient care, which is a skill needed throughout organizations and businesses, not just in hospitals or
Many are the current recruitment problems faced by Health Care Industry and Fraser Health looking for enrolling more nurses in the system. Firstly, because based on the research of Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), the number of the graduates from the nursing diploma programs and the university basic bachelor nursing programs in Canada decreased from 7,387 to 5,500. Some of the factors affecting the nursing career are: • Since women are working in the
Immigration is an attribute of economic and social life throughout many nations, but the portrayal of immigrant residents pretty much varies. Disregarding its origin, immigration has significant effects on our communities, and these can be arguable. The economic influence of immigration is not an exception. Moreover, the United States of America take a leading position as the world’s main destination for immigrants. It is first necessary to explain that immigration enhances the U.S. economy, improves labor productivity, incentives innovation, assists consumers by maintaining low prices, and refines US culture and society.
