Ulysses S. Grant (birth name: Hiram Ulysses Grant) was born on April 27, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio to Jesse R. Grant and Hannah Simpson. The Grant family moved around a lot and Ulysses describes his childhood as an “uneventful” one. Ulysses father, Jesse, organized a way that Ulysses could enter the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York at the age of seventeen. After graduating from the academy, Grant was stationed in St. Louis, Missouri, where he met his future wife, Julia Dent. After spending six years in Missouri, Grant went to fight in the Mexican War (1846-1848); he was promoted to Captain in that war. The couple had four children: Federick Dent Grant (1850-1912), Ulysses S. Grant Jr. (1852-1929), Ellen “Nellie” Wrenshall Grant (1855-1922), and Jesse Grant (1858-1934). Having two children at the time, Ulysses was sent to Fort Vancouver (present day Washington state). Grant returned home in 1854. When Grant heard of the attack of Fort Sumter, Ulysses “volunteered his military services” (www.biography.com) . He was denied to command a troop due to his alcohol problem, but “with the help of an Illinois congressman, he was accepted to command” [a troop] (www.biography.com). “On April 8, 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered his army making an end to the Civil War. The two generals met at a farm to sign a peace treaty” (www.biography.com). On March 4, 1869, Ulysses S. Grant became the 18th President of the United States. Grant served two presidential terms.
