Chapter 2. Theoretical & Conceptual Framework In Erik Erikson’s (1902-1944) Psychosocial Theory entitled “The Eight Psychosocial Stages of Development”, the fourth, seventh and eighth stage is connected to the study. The fourth stage is children ages 6-11 years old, experiencing the “Industry vs Inferiority” phase, where the child tries to achieve a goal and the child needs to have a good education so that the outcomes can become positive for the child, so the child will develop self-confidence.
vErickson’s theory has eight stages that are distinctively different from each other. (10) Among these eight stages, only four are related to child development. (10) According to Erickson (1959) each stage of these related to child development consist of two sides; the positive side which is characterized as being healthy, and the negative one which is character as unhealthy. (10)
Health professionals should be constantly and consistently assessing for signs of abnormal development in children of all ages. Babies tend to develop at their own speed, sometimes falling behind in one area or advanced in another. As long as development falls within a normal range, reaching a milestone late is usually not a cause for concern. However, if a baby consistently reaches milestones much later than expected, it should be discussed with that child’s provider. Babies develop in several areas, and parents and nurses should take notice if a child is having difficulty in a particular one.
During this developmental interview, I chose to conduct an observation/interview study with my one of my cousin’s child. This child is a 4 year old girl and will be identified as “child K” in relation to her first name. Her parents had no problem letting me interview her, but I had them stay in the same room as us. The purpose of this interview was to observe the child’s physical, cognitive, and socioemotional development. I observed her behavior and gave her several tests to show how well she has progressed.
While reading chapter 12 The Physical Environment of our textbook Infants, Toddlers, and Caregivers I stumbled across a quote that stuck with me throughout this project. According to Louis Torelli “A well, designed environment…supports infants’ and toddlers’ emotional well being, stimulates their senses and challenges their motor skills. A well designed group care environment promotes children’s’ individual and social development.” This quote is so meaningful because before doing this project I never realized the layout of your classroom is so influential on the success of your students. When creating the budget, it was really an eye opening experience to how much little and big things that complete a classroom.
How to Cope with Being Unextraordinary When given this assignment, we were told to pick something we are an expert on or can do better than anyone else...and I began thinking of ideas. I sing in choir, I like to organize, and I make pretty good brownies, but after a while of rattling off ideas, I came to a realization: I 'm not extraordinary. There isn 't anything I do better than other people or something I write about without feeling like a fraud. This is how I decided to write about how to cope with being unextraordinary.
In assessing the relation ship between J, who is 4 and his cargivers, his mother and father, the relationship seemed healthy and normal. It was obvious in looking around the apartment that there were many age appropriate toys and books lying around, it was obvious when he would get frustrated or upset that both his parents were meeting his emotional needs, parents got along well and demonstated affection openly otard one another, J was affectionate with his parents and with his older brother (5 years old), and J seemed comfortable and excited to have me in his house to play and observe him. J’s mother was attentive to his needs for snacks and drinks and when snack time was over J just excepted it and carried on without whining or tantrums.
Child Development Infant observation Christina Constance ECE 205 introduction to child development Instructor; Amanda Dixon June 20, 2016 The video showed a childcare teacher that was sitting on the floor with three infants and involving the three infants in an activity. The activity that was shown in the video involved a plastic bottle (this bottle looked like a 64 ounce bottle that had juice in it) with the top opened and some wooden clothes pins. Each one of the infants in the video had one clothes pin. The childcare teacher held the plastic bottle in front of each infant one by one and the goal was for them to drop the clothes pin right into the plastic bottle.
BACKGROUND STUDY (Moore, 1987) Children's development is strongly influenced by the presence of a supportive child care environment. Because children are in the course of developing physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills, their interactions with the physical environment can have long-lasting effects. Understanding the milestones of child development and their relation to the physical environment of the child is fundamental in creating spaces that provide children with opportunities to blossom and advance at a young age (Bunker-Hellmich, 2003). Children, like adults, are influenced in how they feel and behave by the total environment and the physical setting in particular.
2.1 Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by personal factors. Health Status – When a child is born, if there are issues relating to the mother i.e. drug or alcohol use, this can cause a baby to be born small or suffer from foetal alcohol syndrome. This can result in delay of development. After birth the baby will be smaller than average and can sometimes be born with deformed limbs, this can then limit them at school with taking part in certain sporting activities. Children with foetal alcohol syndrome may go on to misuse drugs and alcohol, become expelled from school due to poor behaviour or develop mental health problems.
In the United States about one in six or sixteen percent of children between the ages of three and seventeen have one or more developmental disabilities. With such a high rate one must wonder what causes these problems to happen to so many children. Child development is affected by many things including poverty, parents, and abuse. There are four types of development, physical, cognitive, emotional, and social. Physical development is the growth of gross and fine motor, skills.
The development of children is very important in every circle of life. Child development is a series with a definite pattern of changes in both the physical body and personal attributes which occur naturally from birth (Lynn and wolf 2008). Among all these five this essay is going to explore on cognitive and information processing approach. The aim of this essay is also to explain the developmental milestones focusing mainly on fine and motor development and to bring out what contributes to delays in reaching the milestones, assessing development of children from birth to the age of three.
Human development refers to the progress that human beings make in their lives. Alternatively, childhood development is the process through which a child advances from infancy to independence. Normative development is typically viewed as a continual and cumulative process.
