Unicorns
The Unicorn is a fantastical and mythological creature that has pervaded fairytales, literature, religious mythologies, and artwork, for centuries. Though there are many debates about what the image of the Unicorn means and how it is perceived, the history of the unicorn proves that it serves to reinforce the political and nationalist rhetoric in the United Kingdom. The Unicorn developed into a symbol of power and strength for the United Kingdom. This shift in interpretation occurred with the adoption of the Unicorn to the United Kingdom’s Royal Coat of Arms. Despite changing political climates, the Unicorn still maintains a strong presence throughout the United Kingdom. According to the medieval folklore that has been perpetuated by medieval bestiaries, the lion and the unicorn hate one another. This strange rivalry dates back to the ancient Babylonians in 3,500 B.C. The fight between the two results from the Unicorn representing spring and the lion representing summer. Each year the two fight for supremacy; and each year the lion eventually wins. This is a clear parallel to the reality between both Scotland and England, that can be seen even in modern times. Recently, in 2014, Scotland held a referendum vote to obtain independence from the United Kingdom. The vote did not pass, a sad case for many who oppose the monarch. This English nursery rhyme, encompasses the hatred between the two countries for
The recent vote in Scotland, where the supporters of independence were outvoted by about 10%, is hard to understand without first understanding the long and storied past of the nation. Just north of the location of the Roman Empire’s Hadrian’s Wall lies the present day border between Scotland and England. The Roman’s and later Christian missionaries inhabited the territory. In the late 9th century, the people of what would become Scotland – the Picts and the Scots were united after the death Kenneth MacAlpin, King of the Scots of Dalriada (Maclean 21).
Easter’s End states “The destruction of the island’s animals was as extreme as that of the forest: without exception, every species of native land bird became extinct.” The final similarity I found was that both places were very rich, fertile and filled with abundance amounts of resources. When the natives arrived to these regions they took advantage of the resources provided from the nature for their own uses, not realizing the future of the
Crazy Horse or Cha-O-Ha (“In the Wilderness” or “Among the Trees”) was a Native American war leader of the Oglala Lakota. He took up arms against the U.S. Federal Government to fight them for encroachments on the territories and way of life of the Lakota people. This leads to a victory at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in June 1876. Four months after surrendering to General Cook in May of 1877, Crazy Horse was fatally wounded. He was wounded by a military guard while allegedly resisting imprisonment at Camp Robinson in present day Nebraska.
If you follow the Pagan symbolism, it is a story about the classic medieval tales of love. According to mythology, unicorns are pure, immortal beings which are immune to evil. Nobody can capture them unless they are pure of heart, which was usually portrayed as virgins were the only people able to tame them, which seems to be evidenced in the fifth tapestry. The unicorn coming back to life in the last tapestry is due to unicorns being immortal creatures. However, if you follow the Christian symbolism, it is the story of the passion of the Christ.
Have you ever wondered where different breeds of horses originated from? There are over 350 breeds of horses in the world. They go from two feet tall to roughly seven feet tall. In almost every source of literature, a constant battle occurs between two seemingly equal sides and in the end, only one can prevail. In the historical epic, “Beowulf”, set in eastern Europe in the sixth century, the battle is the vast difference of the higher class noblemen and the foul underbelly of society. The only difference is that in this poem, the crude, lower-class is made up of mythical monsters and medieval demons. The author of “Beowulf” establishes a defined conflict between the barbaric beasts and the civilized people through the juxtaposition of Beowulf and Grendel.
Crazy Horse I would like to meet Crazy Horse because he was Native American and I am Native American. He was also a great warrior and leader of the Lakota Sioux. Crazy Horse fought along Sitting Bull and other American Indian wars. Crazy Horse was an instrument in defeating George Custer.
The British comedy Monty Python and The Holy Grail is the story about a man, King Arthur, and his knights on a mission to find the Holy Grail. On their quest they endure the many tough obstacles of the Middle Ages. Some of these obstacles being realistic and others on the more impractical side. The movie’s filmmakers were aiming to satirize every branch of the Middle Ages such as the medieval Catholic Church, learning and education, the knight’s code of chivalry, and feudalism. One example would be the use of coconuts to imitate the sound of the horses’ hooves hitting the ground.
This illustrates how evil the kingdom of Scotland has become. Lady Macduff references, Macduff refers to Macbeth as a hell-kite that killed all of his chickens, after Macbeth killed Macduff’s family. A hell-kite is a
Fairy Tales are stories that contain magic, romance and wonder yet it these stories contain some morality to them. The Frog Prince is no exception as the prevalent theme is "Don't judge someone by their apperance." However, this story does carry a fair share of symbolism. For instance, the Frog's symbolism can be regrowth and transition but it is the golden objects that are mentioned often. This concept can be seen through the golden ball being a symbol of the Princess's immaturity and rebellion towards growing up to the golen objects being a balancer between the couple.
The fact that Macbeth believes the witches’ prophecies are not evil nor good foreshadows how he will go on to kill any other person standing in his way to more power. His ambition blinds his mind to make him even think about ruthlessly committing a murder. This forceful way of gaining power will only lead Macbeth to become a “tyrant” in Scotland and his “fantastical” desires of killing Duncan and receiving the crown will lead Scotland to failure. Under Macbeth’s rule, Scotland seems to be in a terrible condition. With distrust among the people, there is tension all within the country, as Macbeth’s totalitarian regime had rendered the prosperity of Scotland.
Beware the thane of Fife… Be bloody, bold and resolute; laugh to scorn
Who could refrain, That had a heart to love?”This sudden death of our noble King plunges our country into havoc and uncertainty and without a proper trial of the suspected murderers King Duncan and the good people of Scotland may never receive
Have you ever wondered what was different and similar between those silly and unrealistic fairy tales you were told as a kid? Red Riding Hood was an interesting one about a girl that mistakes a wolf for her granny and, and almost gets eaten. Everyone knows the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Basically, there was a girl that stumbled across a house in the woods and thinks, “It is totally not weird if I walk into someone’s home and use their things.” They catch her and she runs away.
Good Morning everybody, for me this is a memoir day. Today I am feeling honored to be standing reclaiming my throne. I promise you I'll do everything in my power to fight against anyone who wants to harm or ones who had harm our home. To all the thanes that fought with Macbeth and are scared to come back home, you are forgiven return to Scotland.
