In James Paul Gee’s article “Games, Not Schools, Are Teaching Kids to Think”, he argues that video games are better at teaching kids cognitive abilities such as problem solving and micromanagement of tasks than schools and teachers. He claims that traditional classroom learning has shifted to “mechanical instruction methods that rely on line-by-line scripting for teachers and endless multiple-choice testing” (Gee, 566) rather than teaching children HOW to learn. He provides examples of how video games provide young gamers with the opportunity to achieve new learning concepts and skill sets. Mr. Gee gives very little in evidence that schools are not teaching children how to learn.
For many years it was thought that video games have bad impact on students and their learning. This article is proving that video games actually helping students to learn, by providing them games that are fun and actually teaches them something. Now kids can learn in their homes as well because they have access to their learning material anywhere at anytime. In Carmen Tieu’s “Why Violent Video Games Are Good for Girls” she argues that playing violent, first person-shooter (FPS) games, typically played only by boys, can be beneficial for girls. FPS games, in her view, allow girls to “beat guys at their own games” (83). They also allow girls the freedom to play privately (without an adult, visual audience) heckling them about girls playing boys’ games. They can give girls a unique way of bonding with males, feeling like any other player instead of singling them out as a “girl.” Tieu also claims that playing FPS games gives girls the inside scoop on how guys act and what they think and talk about.
In the article it talked a lot about how gaming can be used for therapeutic uses and even for kids after chemotherapy. “A number of studies have shown that when children play video games following chemotherapy, they need fewer painkillers than do others” (paragraph 11). Teacher are also another group of audience because they can learn how gaming can be used to help kids learn better in the class room and studies have shown that “video games have great educational potential in addition to their entertainment value” (paragraph 12). For instance, teachers can used games for motivating, engaging, interactive, and provide rewards and reinforcement to improve. That way kids in the classroom are more engaged with the materials that are taught in class.
