“Don’t touch me - don’t touch me! [...] You’re the Devil's man! [...] I’ll not hang with you! I love God, I love God. [...] He come at me by night and every day to sign, to sign, to- [...] My name, he want my name. “I’ll murder you,” he says, “if my wife hangs! We must go and overthrow the court,” he says!”(Miller 198). In Arthur Miller's “The Crucible” there are many places where weakness, courage, and truth are shown. In this essay you will read how each one of these were presented in the story. In “The Crucible” there are many places where weakness is shown. Weakness is expressed quite a bit by Mary Warren. Mary fails to stand to the truth of what has happened in the trials. This is because Abigail intimidates and pressures her so much that she loses all strength and sides with Abigail. Mary knows everything that has happened, she knows that John is correct. Though all Mary does is turn on him. In the text while Mary is in court testifying against Abi she weakens. Mary falls for Abigail's tricks and states that John is lying. Mary claims that John threatens to murder her if his wife hangs. Mary becomes too weak …show more content…
John is courageous because in the courtroom he does whatever it takes for him to prove that he and his wife are truthful innocent people. John also makes it apparent that his past action of sleeping with Abigail should not define him in the face of reality. Elizabeth is courageous because she stands with John even though he has slept with another woman. She also shows courage by lying to try and cover for her husband, because she is known as a person not to lie. Additionally Giles is very Courageous. Giles is on the verge of death and the only way to keep alive is if he rats out names though Giles exclaims that he will not bring harm to another. While they are weighing his chest down with rocks all he says is “more weight”. Similarly to courage there is also
Mary Warrenn is the weak one who folds under pressure, the most courageous character would be John Proctor because he will speak against people. There was a time when the people in Salem were scared, the story The Crucible tell a story about my chosen character John Proctor who was brave, truthful, and sometimes weak. John wasn’t always a true man because he had an affair a young girl named abigail she's 17. He eventually stopped being shady, and admitted everything to his wife Elizabeth. During the time of Abigail's vengeance John didn't deny anything in front of the court.
Mary Warren tried to tell them she had put the needle in there after she was finished making it but they proceeded to take Elizabeth into custody. John was accused of witchcraft which means he is automatically guilty, it is not like present day, “innocent until proven guilty”. This means he might have to confess to save his own life. John was clearly irritated by Abigail’s acts in the courthouse he actually confesses his sin of adultery with Abigail.
Arthur Miller's The Crucible's portrayal of the accusations leading to the demise of any convicted being shows the reader that humans are inherently accusatory, and will do anything to ease blame from ourselves, no matter how outlandish the claim. This treatment of fellow man can only be equated to that of the Red Scare during the Cold War years. The Crucible was published between 1952 and 1953, in the heart of the Cold War, where Miller wrote The Crucible while under stress of Russian engagement. Miller's portrayal of deception is well conceived in the novel, and ties in directly with the deception and espionage-like treatment of people during the Red Scare. Miller also sheds light upon the effects of saving oneself by conviction of another.
Mary says this because she is afraid that she might be hanged for lying as Abigail and the
Mary Warren is willing to testify that Abigail and the girls are lying about seeing the devil in the woods. When Mary goes to testify Abigail lies about Mary’s spirit coming to attack her in the court. Mary realize she is being turned on she accuses John of seeing the devil that is when he is arrested for witchcraft. Getting John arrested is not what Abigail wanted, Abigail has gone too far.
John shows courage by not signing the confession to witchcraft. (page. 1230- 1231) Giles the old but courageous man demonstrates extreme amounts of courage when he refused to say the names
There are not bold enough words that can express the dramatic changes of several, if not all, of the characters in The Crucible. Abigail admits to witchcraft, Proctor admits to lechery, and Elizabeth lies. While other characters have changes in development, Parris has one underlying quality that is his one and only true motivator: his own self preservation. Everyone has some motivation in the way of self preservation. From eating regularly to not driving recklessly, there are certain things people do in order to stay alive.
Courage is the “ability to do something that frightens someone”. This theme is shown in many ways in To Kill a Mockingbird. The major examples which depicted courage were Atticus’ role in Tom’s trial, Mrs. Dubose’s battle against her morphine addiction and Arthur Radley’s heroic acts towards Jem and Scout. However, despite these bold actions and motives, the ensuing results are not positive. People who demonstrate courage are not always rewarded or recognized,
Arthur Miller's play, "The Crucible," is an amazing work that examines the pressure and moral conflict experienced by the characters in the Salem witch trials. The title itself alludes to the container used for heating substances, symbolizing the emotional and psychological turmoil experienced by the characters. The play exposes the dangers of groupthink and blindly following authority. The people of Salem were in a state of panic, as accusations of witchcraft spread rapidly throughout the community.
Even knowing the weakness of Mary, Abigail screamed accusations : "Oh, Mary, this is a black art to change your shape. No, I cannot, I cannot stop my mouth; it's God's work I do. "(Act 3, Pg.115). Mary escapes by accusing John, which leads to his conviction and hanging, ironically ruining Abby's
The Crucible Essay Rough Draft In Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible,” he analyzes fear and how it is used to reveal the hysteria of the characters caused by the witch trials. Nearly everyone has lied at least once in our lifetime, but for what reason? The concept of lying is nothing new in fact, everyone lies are all very different. Most of time, lie has a motivation behind it. Everyone and even including the characters from “The Crucible” have different reasons for lying depends on their own purpose/goal. The decision to lie isn't without a purpose, it always has a motivation for goal in mind as with the connections between Bhattacharjee’s article “Why We Lie: The Science behind our complicated relationship with the truth” and the characters from “The Crucible”share/support the concept of lying for a purpose.
(I.465-472). Seeing Abigail cry, it suggests that Abigail’s affair with John Proctor has influenced her behavior in jealousy and lust as she strives for nothing more than her love for John Proctor. By only being heartbroken, Abigail is not to be fully blamed for the hysteria within the town as her actions are only based on desperate attempts to win John Proctor over, and no intentional harm whatsoever. However, on the other hand, Abigail cannot be excused with outside forces making her the way she is due to the fact that she has clearly had a choice in most of her decisions and actions throughout the witchcraft crisis. When Mary Warren, another girl involved in the forest incident, enters the court, she explains to Danforth, the judge, that the girls are lying and are only pretending to see spirits.
Everyone longs for success. They desire the acceptance and approval for following their moral compass, being rewarded, and being acknowledged. However, one cannot maintain success without a purposeful and achievable position of power. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller the power of society is bound upon a pronounced hierarchy. Men naturally are deemed as having higher status than women in society.
Mary desperately wants to tell the truth because she believes their punishment will be less severe if they are truthful. Because of this Abigail threatened her and the other girls, saying they will not tell the truth, so the girls decide to use the two afflicted girls to their advantage and claim witchcraft. Their claim of witchcraft leads to an entire mess of people being falsely accused. John Proctor knows that the girls are lying but doesn't do anything about it until his wife is arrested. Whereupon he forces Mary Warren to tell him the truth and say that she will tell the truth to the court to save all of the innocent people.
