The National Honors Society is an organization that recognizes those who have shown the potential to adhere to the four pillars of society. The four pillars the National Honors Society sets its merit and foundation would be scholarship, leadership, service, and character. During the time that I have been a part of Nation Ford High School, and even the time preceding my high school years, I feel that I have accurately satisfied the requirements and applications of the four pillars which are noted above. Beginning with the first pillar of scholarship, I have managed to maintain an unweighted GPA of 4.0 with a weighted average of 5.15. I have worked effortlessly and effectively to make sure my grades were always in the highest percentile to …show more content…
Being a part of the Nation Ford Marching band and allocating a great deal of time to an activity played a large role in my growing leadership capabilities. During the first semester of my sophomore year, I was selected to become a mentor for the freshman class of 2026. After previously participating in drum major workshops to support my interest in becoming a stronger leader, I was able to apply the lessons I learned to a real environment. Having the privilege of being a mentor for my section allowed me to gain more confidence by helping others. I found myself enjoying the long, scorching practices because I was happy to be aiding the growth of others- those that needed the confidence I needed during my first year of marching band. Even after marching band came to an end, I still managed to apply my leadership skills to the beginning of our concert season. I would host solo help sessions during flex with some of my other friends to make sure the freshmen were in the best shape for auditions. Whether it be on the field or indoors, I …show more content…
The final way that I feel the pillar of service can be applied to my life would be my willingness to help fellow students with programming dilemmas they may have come across while creating a program. At the studio I attended during my freshman year, I was one of the highest programmers at the time, so I was usually one of the first to test the curriculum as a student. Whenever I had the chance or opportunity, I would always try and help younger students who were struggling at the time. Helping these students learn to do something that I had learned to love and enjoy makes me feel fulfilled and lucky to have been able to serve them as I did on several
Any good program needs a strong leadership team, and I have always wanted to be a strong leader because I love helping others be their very best. In our marching band program our section leaders are called FOG (For Others Greatness), they are chosen not only for their musicality but also for their ability to work with and guide others. The section leaders during my freshman year were incredible and I longed to be just like them when I was finally able to apply and audition for the position. I am on the color guard and do not play an instrument during the marching season, therefore my color guard skills would need to be at an elevated level in comparison to those of my peers. As the audition portion of the application came about I worked diligently

One aspect of being section leader that I feel that has been lacking in the past that I would try to bring into my leadership is reaching out to people regarding their marching. If I notice something that could be improved about someone’s marching, whether it be pushing their shoulders a little bit more, moving earlier to hit a visual move on beat 1, or any other detail to improve their visuals, I will make a point to check in with them and provide some thoughts on how to refine their abilities. During the few rehearsals in the 2016 season that I spent running the Dr. Beat, there were many instances where I noticed how could offer help to both veteran and new marchers when their visuals were not sharp enough. In addition to this, I plan to also introduce more comprehensive resources to use during the summer to be more prepared for band camp. I created a website for the winds of the marching band which has resources such as metronome and tuner apps for both Android and iOS, a metronome website, a Google Drive folder with sheet music and drill of the show, and other resources that could be used to better prepare yourself for the upcoming band camp.
I am still looking for more opportunities to show my leadership and through NHS, I am hopeful I can accomplish that. One moment that showed my role as a leader, was mentoring the younger team of a sport I came to love recently. Lacrosse has become a passion of mine in a short period, I devote many hours to the sport to become an advert team player. I started building connections and friendships with younger players; we both would connect on the sport as I showed my love for it, and being able to help them out. Another leadership role that I demonstrate is being the section leader for my orchestra class.
Service to me means, giving your all to you school and community without expecting anything in return. At a young age, I participated in many fundraising events with my dance team where we provided a service to others such as annual car washes, waiting tables at various restaurants, and organizing dances and activities for kids. In Junior High I was a key club member and we volunteered for concession stand duties, helped out at elementary basketball tournaments, and acted as line judges or referees at volleyball tournaments. Since my mom is a first grade teacher, I spent many summers setting up and organizing her classroom, and on my days off from school, I provided kids in my mom’s classroom with help in reading or math. As a part of Earth Week at our school, I did various jobs for people in my community.
I am extremely honored to be eligible for this opportunity to apply for the National Honor Society. Becoming a member of the National Honor Society has been a goal I set for myself since I was a student in middle school. I have been greatly looking forward to this moment for a very long time. Overall, I have worked incredibly hard these last two years to display a positive character and obtain qualities such as leadership, responsibility, and scholarship. I strongly believe I will be a productive and reliable member of the National Honor Society at Harvard H. Ellis Technical High School.
This definition of Leadership is best restated by my very own father “A person can demonstrate leadership skills even when not in a leadership position.” Throughout my high school years so far, I have demonstrated leadership mostly in the field of Boy Scouting in two different Troops. I started out my leadership trail in Boy Scouting by becoming a Troop Scribe who as per se the Boy Scout Handbook, 2016 Edition “The Scribe attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings. He records attendance and dues payments of all troop members and records advancement in troop records and on the troop advancement chart.” After that, I ascended into becoming a Patrol Leader and then acting as a Senior Patrol Leader, the highest youth leader of the troop, handling all patrols’ affairs and coordinating with the Scoutmaster for advice and consent.
Since the day I started at NBHS and got to witness the strength, responsibility, and the impressions able to be made by a senior with a title in the band, I knew I wanted to audition for one my junior year. I will never forget my original seniors. They were like gods to me. They knew everything about the band, they made it so the band would function at its fullest potential, and they brought guidance and structure to all those who were under them. There are many layers to band leader positions.
I sacrificed my time to help plan for the Relay for Life. The Relay for Life event changed people's lives because it inspired them to donate money to cancer research and to help join the fight to end cancer. The character pillar has shaped by development by making the excellent choices. I started helping out for the community in any way possible. I have gained a lot of responsibility through the National Honor Society because I was responsible for writing a Relay for Life speech and delivering a speech for the American Cancer Society.
Many different leadership positions are available at Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School, giving students a wonderful opportunity to get involved in something they enjoy. There are even various places to take internships, including outside and inside of the school district. I’ve taken part in a few of these wonderful opportunities, including becoming a leader in choir, managing boy’s track, and being a teacher’s assistant through an internship at my high school. At the end of my freshman year in high school, I was elected to take a leadership class, making me able to lead a part in our choir the following year.
Through high school I have been a part of my school's marching band, and for the last three years I have held a position as a drum major. My role as drum major was not only to lead the band musically but also to lead them mentally. I needed to make sure that everyone was in good spirits, and I also needed to have a healthy level of communication with the band and our director. After my sophomore year, our band director retired and was replaced by a young director who had just graduated college. Our first year without our old director went well because he kept us under his wing and gave our new director advice.
I chose to play keyboard (mallet percussion) in 4th grade, and am now enrolled in Jazz Band, Marching Band, Indoor Percussion, a Jazz Trio, and Symphonic Band. Most of my opportunities regarding servitude leadership come from Marching and Indoor, where I play marimba at the center of the pit, and (during marching season explicitly) lead my section. Now, “leading my section” means a plethora of things that we’ve been addressing during leadership meetings. Leading my section, as a servant leader, means taking responsibility for anything that happens, and being a team player. As I’ve gained experience with leading, I have sought not to decide and finalize, but to recommend and understand.
I am the right choice for leadership because I am very active in J.W. Mitchell High School Band. I am motivated and driven in helping the band be successful in all areas as well as being a dedicated member of the band. I play 5 instruments and 3 are in the clarinet family. Also I am always available to help the band staff after school and to help other band members. I am a dedicated and positive person who would like to be in music and band leadership
My membership in both National Honor Society and Beta have shown me the importance of giving back to my community. The various volunteering opportunities presented by each of these organizations allowed me to discover the significant difference I can make by simply giving my time and effort to those who need it. My role as Right Wing on the Comeaux High School Soccer Team built upon this realization, showing the exponentially greater result that I can attain when working with a group. I was also better able to humble myself, appreciating the importance of small parts when contributing to a whole. My constant employment at various businesses, along with playing soccer for my school, taught me the importance of listening to and following the instructions of those in charge.
2017 Leadership Essay Band, at least for me, is a place that I am able to escape from the worries of the outside world and do what I love. This year, there were many times that I felt overwhelmed and stressed, and the band room was always there, full of people who would help and support through whatever problem I was having. The majority of people who helped me were in leadership, almost every single one. I am so grateful for the care I received, and I think that the best way for me to be able to give it back to next year’s freshman is to be in leadership, because that is where the people who helped me were. I may be a freshman, but I have a genuine passion for band.
