The Children's Crusade
Stephen of Cloyes was a child of deep faith who wanted the Holy Land to be governed by Christian people. With no way of bringing people together to march along with each other. In the Thirteenth century a children's movement took place with a goal of going to the Holy Land and establishing Christianity. This was known as the children's crusade. Stephen of Cloyes began to travel around Europe gathering teens to march to the Holy Land.. The children were focused on Christianity and had a high desire to spread it. Along the way they gathered many middle age Christians to participate in their movement. The Children's Crusade was very controversial and faced many challenges but they took action and there were positive and negative results.
The first controversial part of the children Crusade was people thought that it exposed violence to children. This meant that it made children more violent in general and resulted in a bad look for Christianity. The Muslims thought that Christianity was just trying to kill them and get rid of them. Which in reality the only purpose the kids had in the Children's Crusade was to turn non-Christian Believers and to Christians. Another one of the most controversial things about the Crusade the children went on the march to the Holy

Earlier the church encouraged the marches to the Holy Land but this one they did not because they were scared for the kids and parents. Challenge that they faced was having low wages which meant they were going to be hungry and thirsty. This led to many children dying of thirst and hunger and some of them drowned. another Act of getting the children to stop the March with many of them were sold as slaves and laborers. The children also faced the spread of disease and on the way most of them were attacked and killed by Bandits. This led to the death of many young children in
From the years 1095-1099 Crusaders set out on a march to the Holy Land. It was poorly organized due to the fact that four different leaders along with Peter the Hermit and his People’s Crusade came together to battle against the Muslims and Jews. Big battles Crusades were forced to take on where: Battle for Nicaea, Dorylaum, Antioch, Herenc, Jerusalem and many others along the way. Four key leaders; Godfrey of Bouillon, Raymond of Saint Gilles, Bohemond of Taranto and Hugh of Vermandois, brought different tactics to how they were going to take on different battles creating a difficult course for defenders. The First Crusade was a battle for Christianity to be the dominate religion and it was a turning point in European history, starting a series of Crusades to
The greatly needed stability for the Holy Roman Empire motivated the political leaders for the undertaking of the Christian Crusades. At this time the Holy Roman Empire was a poverish and the majority of the people who were in the middle and lower class were not able to live comfortably. In addition the government was not strong enough to advance let alone support the people. The fairly new feudalist government created a separation within the classes the made the lower class serfs, Middle class knight and the upper class lords and kings fight for mobility and power. In result of this violence and chaos erupted.
The crusades impacted the way we live today in many ways. In the outcome, there were both positives and negatives associated with the crusades. It was violent, deceased many, and turned cities into ruins but it also was a job opportunity for merchants and brought many new luxuries to certain places. Some motivation for people to fight in the crusades were different than its organizers. The original reason many wanted to come fight in the crusades is that it would relieve them of all of their sins.
The Crusades was a war between two religions , which were Islam and Christianity. They both were fighting for the holy land in Jerusalem. For the Christians the holy land meant that Jesus was born there. For the Muslims the holy land was where Muslims believe Muhammad the prophet was taken to heaven by Allah which is called The Dome Of Rock. In our opinion the Crusades were a failure because it was a waste of time and a lot of lives were lost.
Religion had a huge effect on the Crusades and how it played out in the long run the economy during the Crusades was changing a lot and for the better in some aspects. One thing that changed was the Increased trade in international trade across the Mediterranean which gave them more new products and increased sales. The products they got were Spices, sugar, dates, watermelon, lemons, Cotton cloth, Persian carpets, and other things too. Another thing that happened was Technology of Islamic achievements was now known in the west and east Europe giving them more ideas. paper, water wheels, and better castle buildings were also brought back to Europe.
Introduction: Provide background information on the Crusades, restate the DBQ question, state thesis with reasons. (include academic vocabulary and underline) The results of the Crusades was probably more negative than positive. In “Doc 4”, It states that “Moreover, the assault of one Christian people on another, when one of the goals of the Fourth Crusade was reunion of Greek and Latin churches, made the split between the Greek and Latin churches permanent.” The Crusades had a lot of hatred to the religions, and by 1204 the Crusaders had lost some of their appeal because the knights agreed to attack the Byzantine Capital instead.
This contributed to the shame of the event. Many inspired Christians “often pursued violence against other non-Christians”, they were brutal and left many for dead (Document #2, “The Crusades Assignment”). Crusaders were merciless and it was just shameful that they treated other religions this way. Along with violence their emotions they felt towards their actions were shameful. After reaching their goal, Jerusalem, they were filled with “mad with joy” and after killing many Muslims and Jews to get their they were also “full of happiness and weeping with joy” (Document #3, “The Crusades Assignment”).
The Crusades were a violent series of battles that Christians fought against Muslims in order to gain back the holy land, Jerusalem. The Christians felt threatened by the intimidating rule of the Islamic Empire, and their response was the first Crusade. These attacks continued and grew unsuccessful throughout many years, and are often due to the intense bond between Christians and God, however there are other influences, like wealth and power. Some argue also that the actions committed during these events were not necessarily “barbaric”, considering the historical time period. The Crusades should be remembered as a series of attacks with a variety of motives and influences that were violent and barbaric.
The becoming of the children’s crusade was due to the actions of a couple young visionaries, which held the names of Nicholas and Stephen, both claimed to have been touched by God and received word to further the battle to take over Jerusalem for the Christians. Even though the children were only 12 years of age, they took on the task of speaking the word given to them while gathering many people to listen from all over the world. The help gained by the two young boys were mainly the less fortunate but that was no reason for the children to give up hope in spreading the word given to them. With the leadership of Godfrey and various other French lords, the first crusade had begun.
The people of the church took advantage of the Crusades and used it to rid the knights who consistently fought each other in the church. Crusades also divide people by taking sons from families. In the textbook Chapter 14, titled “The Crusades,” it stated, “Others who participated in the Crusades were younger sons who were looking for land and a position in society or for adventure.” This is showing division by getting rid of church members and also basically bribing younger sons to leave home and find something new. Coming to a conclusion, the Crusades were “holy wars or expeditions” that united and divided people in many significant ways.
Pope Urban II’s speech at Clermont in 1095 was a call to crusade given outdoors to the nobles, commoners and church leaders of the Western European Christians (the Franks). The people were moved by this speech and it changed history, launching the first crusade to capture Jerusalem from the Muslim Turks. After hearing Pope Urban II’s speech, thousands of Western European Christians were moved to embark on the dangerous journey and fight in the crusade. I believe the main reasons they were moved and persuaded to fight was; 1) they felt it was their Christian duty, 2) Pope Urban promised them absolution for their sins and 3) they felt compelled to defend Christianity, their holy land and the Eastern Christians.
The crusade was typically made up of peasants due to the numbers of soldiers. Even though the peasants weren’t very skilled, it still the job because in 1099 the Christians beat the Turks and took over the Holy Lands. This was a very important crusade because it slowed down the Muslims for a decent amount of time, it brought Christians together, and it changed the lifestyle of many people throughout that time. Victory was
Many things happened during the crusades. First crusaders left there families, the women and children where left to fend for themselves. In the first and only successful crusade the crusaders killed all Muslim inhabitants of Jerusalem. Although the crusaded was successful, within 46 years the land had to be fought for agin. All thought there was other crusades they still didn 't manage regain the holy land.
The Crusades were successful failures because they did not meet many of their goals, but left lasting effects. The Crusades was an attempt by the Roman Catholic Church to regain the Holy Lands from the Muslims. They believed they were fighting for god and all sins would be forgiven and defend the Byzantine Empire from the Turks. The first Crusade (1096 -1099) was successful for the Christians because they had a clear and organized religious based purpose. Crusaders the Christian armies were able to hold Jerusalem and in the process led to a massacre of Jews.
The Muslim people were the ones being attacked and had opposing viewpoints of what was going on. The views of the crusades were vastly different from two of the largest religious groups of their time, the Christians and the Muslims. The Christians looked at the crusade as their religious and personal mission and duty. After all, the Christians were the ones who were leading the crusades and they were the ones who were the biggest advocates of them.
