Rebecca Trammell College US History Joe Waters December 7, 2015 Fredrick Douglass Review Fredrick Douglass was a very important abolitionist during the abolitionist movement. He was a well-educated African American man, which was almost unheard of at the time, who not only escaped slavery but also gave hope to blacks everywhere and showed that slavery was not a “necessary evil” like many had thought. He was well known for giving speeches against slavery and for equality. He even wrote a memoir which shocked people everywhere to know that a former slave, that had recently escaped none the less, could even write let alone write a book. The autobiography told of his life in slavery and other main events in his life. His story caused many people to join the abolitionist movement in an attempt to end slavery, but they would still have a few years to wait on that. …show more content…

His exact birthdate is unknown because slaves and slave owners did not keep track of birthdates. Since he was young he did house work instead of working in the fields. His owner’s wife began teaching him to read once he was old enough to finally start working. As he got older, he started out with some of the more educated blacks and began to realize something. He realized that the key to escaping slavery was education. Once he turned 20, after some convincing of the free blacks in the area, Fredrick escaped from his slave owner and fled to New York. While up there he married Anna Murray, a free black woman. After a while, they started to get nervous with Fredrick’s fugitive status and soon they moved up to Massachusetts where Fredrick changed his last name from Bailey to Douglass.
