Researching serial killers and attempting to come up with reasons why they commit such brutal and outrageous crimes is difficult. One has to not only look back in to how the killer was brought up but the relationships they experienced throughout their lives and the factors which may have lead them to their crimes. Throughout this paper, a background of one of the most notorious serial killers in the U.S., Gary Ridgway will be analyzed. A look into his childhood will discover both psychological and sexual abuse brought on by his mother and father. Ridgway’s adolescent years were also filled with indicators of a teenager in need of help. Finally, his relationship experiences will be looked at and given a psychological reasoning behind his horrendous …show more content…
There were several psychological factors that help explain why Ridgway committed the awful crimes he did.
OVERVIEW OF CRIMES The crimes committed by serial killer Gary Ridgway began in 1982, when two boys playing found the body of a woman prostitute. Soon after, 4 more victims were discovered along the Green River. Thereafter a task force was developed to deal exclusively with the Green River killings. Although there was a task force designated to the Green River killings, one year later there was a body count connected with Green River killings of up to 20 women. While Ridgway was not directly linked to any of the murders at this time, he did actively try to be involved in the investigation, which then tipped off investigators. Ridgway was then given a polygraph test, which he passed. It was three years later that Ridgway's home was finally searched and DNA was taken that would eventually link him to several of the murders. As more evidence came in linking Ridgway to the murders he ultimately made a plea deal which would take the death penalty off of the table and he would be sentenced to life in prison. Ridgway pled guilty to 48 counts of

He felt as though he was never able to please her and felt inadequate due to his low academic performance. The violence in Ridgway's sexual fantasies is something of particular interest. According to Alley et al., (2014) “sadistic or controlling sexual fantasies increase the risk of murderous behaviour” (p.290), which is precisely the type of behaviour displayed by Ridgway early in his adolescent years. Displaying these this type of behaviour so early in life is troublesome. Most adolescent boys do not dream of having sadistic sex with their mothers at any age, so experiencing it during the adolescent years is disturbing. It is especially concerning knowing now what he did to his victims; having violent sex with the prostitutes, strangling them to death and returning back to the corps to engage in necrophilia. This indeed could be related to a number of issues that occurred throughout Ridgway's life, including the fantasies about his mother. There is also a connection between Ridgway's feelings toward his mother and who he would later choose to victimize, all being women prostitutes. This could potentially be Ridgway seeking revenge on his mother for issues suffered during his childhood. As acknowledged by Miller (2014) “their fantasized fusing of cruelty and sexuality usually begins
Gary Ridgway pleads not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder. In November of 2003 prosecutors offer Ridgway a plea deal eliminating the death penalty if he plead guilty to 48 murders. In December 2003 Ridgway pleads guilty to the murder of 48 woman avoiding the death penalty. Gary ridgeway was sentenced to 48 life sentences and no possibility of
Those weren’t his only brushes with the law. It turned out the he was a prime suspect when the first bodies found and was brought in for questioning. In 1985, he was accused him of grabbing from behind and putting her in a choke-hold. While as far back as 1982 and 1983, a witness saw one of the victims, Marie M. Malvar, get into his car.
He did have some close calls. In 1983, a victim named Maria was taken off the strip where her boyfriend saw her being taken. The boyfriend followed the pickup truck, yet the truck got away from him(Harthorne, 2013). The police questioned Gary Ridgway because the boyfriend recognized it to be his truck. Gary Ridgway convinced the police that it was not his truck.
There have been other bodies found with a similar elements to his signature but have yet to be linked to him. One of the bodies found is Rebecca Marrero, who disappeared on December 3, 1982 and was found where one of the Green River’s victims, Marie Malvar, was found. If Rebecca Marrero was one of his victims then she would be his forty-ninth. Gary Ridgway was always a suspect for the Green River killings but when they took him in for a polygraph he passed it.
Dahmer is known for his murders, which involved cannibalism and necrophilia. Jeffrey Dahmer’s evil past, including his childhood, murders, and trial, is a prime example of man's inhumanity to man. Statistically, murderers have a troubled background which includes abuse and sexual
History (Montaldo, 2017). Who is this man and what would drive an individual to kill innocent woman and young girls who were for lack of better term prostitutes? Born in Utah and raised in Seattle Washington, he was not considered an intelligent man but someone with a low IQ and a person who tortured animals (Gary Ridgway, n.d.). Gary’s mother, who he was infatuated with was mentally and physically abusive causing him to wet the bed frequently (Gary Ridgway, n.d.). “In 1963, aged 14, Gary attempted to kill a six-year-old boy by stabbing him, but wasn’t caught” (Gary Ridgway, n.d.).
On May 23, 1991, the victim, a social service worker, was found dead near her upstate New York farmhouse. According to Medical examiners she had been choked, stabbed, and beaten to death. The victim had also been bitten several times. Roy Brown was considered the prime suspect of the murder. Just a year prior to the murder, Brown's daughter was placed into a residential care facility by the agency the victim had worked for.
At first he was just a potential suspect until DNA evidence linked semen left in the victims to the saliva swab taken by the police. The four victims named in the original indictment were Marcia Chapman, Opal Mills, Cynthia Hinds, and Carol Ann Christensen. Other victims like Wendy Coffield, Debra Bonner, and Debra Estes were added to the list after a forensic scientist identified microscopic spray paint spheres as a specific brand and composition of paint used at the Kenworth factory during the specific time frame when these victims were killed. Gary is believed to have murdered at least 71 teenage girls and women near Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. He targeted sex workers because he thought they might not be reported missing and because he “hated” most of them.
On the basis of his confessions, hundreds of unsolved murders connected to him were officially classified as clear. With all said and done, the actual number of murders that he committed is still unknown
He was captured until July 22, 1991 when one of the men he was planning on murdering escaped. You may be wondering how can someone can commit such horrible killings and get off on it the way he did. His background was kind of strange people always thought
Ridgway said he was often asked if he was the killer at large to which he would respond “Do I look like the Killer?”. Ridgway a 5’10’, 155 pound older male was often then dismissed by the women as they assumed he wasn’t capable. All of the women he killed were between 16-38 years of age and they were all strangled to death. Ridgway frequently engaged in rape and necrophilia with all the women he killed. Ridgway planted most of the women along the Green River in clusters, resulting in his nickname the “Green River Killer”.
Search warrants were eventually served to Gacy and during the second search, remains of bodies were found under his home. What they did not know was that Rob was not under the home, Gacy wrapped Rob into a carpet and threw him into the Des Plaines river, Rob’s body washed ashore in the spring of 1979. Gacy went into very descriptive detail about the rape and murder of Rob, Gacy claimed Rob was refusing so he had put a rope around his neck and strangled him. Gacy was arrested and used an insanity plea in hopes of a not guilty verdict. The ruse did not work, he was found guilty on May 10, 1994.
In this paper I will be applying the psychological theories to serial killer Ed Gein. Ed Gein was a prolific serial killer in the 1950’s. He murdered and robbed graves for body parts to make furniture and clothing. He was apprehended in 1957, where he stood trial and was institutionalized. Edward Theodore “Ed” Gein was born August 27th, 1906 to George and Augusta Gein.
Ted Bundy was a notorious serial murderer who’s reign of terror lasted from 1974 to 1978. Bundy was convicted of three homicides and was sentenced to death for all three charges. However, at the time of his execution, Bundy confessed to 30 murders however the exact number of victims is still unknown. Bundy’s crimes evolved over time but he was both a sexual sadist and a necrophiliac serial killer. At the beginning of his rampage, Bundy would sneak into the victims house in the middle of the night, violently attack them while they were sleeping with a blunt object and then Bundy would usually sexually assault them.
The MacDonald Triad is an important piece of information that can possibly identify deviant behavior in juveniles that lead to serial killings in the future. The triad includes three ominous parts to it including; fire setting, enuresis, and cruelty to animals. A key element to the triad is large number of serial killers have admitted to experiencing and committing at least one aspect of the triad. Neglect and child abuse have all been concurrent with serial killers that have characteristics relating to the triad.
