Selfishness is something to watch out for in life, if you let it follow you it can cause your life to turn down the wrong path, and can forever destroy you when your life is finally set in place. In the traditional story of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens follows a greedy selfish old man in the 1800’s of England. Ebenezer Scrooge was a old grumpy man who was visited by 3 spirits to make him see that he need to change his selfish ways. In the modern work of Dr. Seuss, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Grinch stole all of the Who’s toys and Christmas Decorations down in Whoville but when Cindy Lou Who tries to get him to believe in Christmas he refuses. Scrooge is not happy with his friend Marley who warned him about the ghosts that are going to visit him. He is visited by the Ghost of Christmas Past, and is watching the dreadful memory when Belle broke up with him. He was having fun until he was reminded of that dreadful moment in his life. One of the phrases Belle used in the process of breaking up with Ebenezer is, “You fear the world too much”(Dickens 26 ). This is one of the reasons Scrooge doesn’t like christmas because when reminded of his past relationship and when the ghost of christmas past revisited that memory. Scrooge was not happy. As well as The Grinch was very against christmas but started to have fun at the whoville-nation. The Grinch was invited to whoville-nation but started to have fun, but was soon reminded why he hated christmas. He remembered when someone in his class got him a razor for christmas because he was to hairy. It really opened his eyes to what fun was like, but when he was reminded of why he didn’t like christmas he got mad. Was like when Scrooge was shut up about his life with his memory with Belle. All things as I said before Scrooge is a nasty man with good deep down as does the
He couldn’t believe in one night someone could change like he did. It was a miracle and this how. In the play and in the movie, Scrooge both unappreciated Christmas the way it was. In the movie and the play, Scrooge passed by some carolers.
How can a character overcome selfishness and transition into a compassionate character? Emotionally, Scrooge has transitioned from a selfish to a compassionate character. In the novel, A Christmas Carol, by Dickens, overcoming selfishness and transitioning into a compassionate character is illustrated in the theme. Scrooge overcomes selfishness and is more compassionate to others. Scrooge says, “Hear me!
Looking from the start of "A Christmas Carol", which I will call from now on "the book", Scrooge is described in the worst way a human could be described. Dickens' fantastic descriptions drew an image of a sharp, misanthropic, covetous old miser. His greed for wealth and his superb selfishness made him stand out like a goose in a queue of ducks compared to the charity men's benevolence and his comely nephew's good heart. as "the book" describes, Scrooge is a "tightfisted hand at the grindstone...hard and sharp as flint, solitary as an oyster. "(page 12), highlighting his selfishness and hostility.
A big thing to know about Scrooge is that he absolutely despises Christmas time and wishes that people who celebrate Christmas should be burned with their own pudding and be buried with a stake of holly through their heart. (Page 238, paragraph
Before the ghosts’ visit Scrooge had a dismal and gloomy attitude towards Christmas because he tells his nephew that exclaiming “Merry Christmas” is absurd. After the ghosts’ visit Scrooge yells Merry Christmas out his window. Another example of Scrooge hating Christmas is before he doesn’t want to go to the Christmas party and insults it. On Christmas day, after the ghosts’ visit he decides to go to the Christmas party. The last example from before the ghosts’ visit is how he is mean to his clerk, Bob, and is mad that he is asking to take Christmas day off.
Scrooge remembers emotions from his earlier years; he recalls what it feels like to be loved and cared for. Tears come to Scrooge’s eyes as he ponders a memory of his sister embracing his younger self. He remembers the tender affection, and the deep connection that they shared. Ebenezer regrets the ways that he cherished money over his dear sister and over Belle, the love of his life. As he watches his younger self, Scrooge recognizes that his business took over his life, resulting in his disconnection with his sister and Belle.
“Christmas is a necessity. There has to be at least one day of the year to remind us that we’re here for something else besides ourselves.” this is the quote Eric Sevareid said and what Scrooge will start believing once he is visited by the three spirits which allow him to start bringing kindness, joy, warmth and much more into his life besides money. In A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge is a miser who learns the true meaning of Christmas when three spirits visit him on the night of Christmas Eve. Scrooge later learns to be a joyful person on Christmas after the wonderful little visits he gets by these three spirits.
In Staves 3 and 4 of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge undergoes a drastic change in personality due to the events shown by the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. At the end of the novella, Scrooge is found to be a better man. He learns to be charitable and to value family and companionship. PARAGRAPH 1 Stave 3 affects Scrooge immensely as it shows him that Christmas is a time to be shared with loved ones and that it should not matter whether the person is rich or poor. An example being the Cratchit family as they have little in the way of money but they abound in love and joy.
The ghost of Christmas past influenced Scrooge because it showed him that money doesn’t matter. The ghost showed Scrooge with Belle and Scrooge realized what he missed out on. Scrooge and Belle were not together anymore because he cared more about his wealth than her. The ghost of Christmas past showed Scrooge a time when Belle broke off their engagement and Scrooge said, “Spirit! Show me no more!
The way Scrooge acts in the story says a lot about him, however, so does the description about him in the sixth paragraph. The passage precisely states that Scrooge is “a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone” and “hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel struck out a generous fire.” Furthermore, the passage shows greater detail by saying that he’s “a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner” and “solitary as an oyster.” This plethora of information shows a generous amount of greediness and cold-heartedness. Moreover, this quote states,“the cold within him froze his features,” which proves the point that he isn’t a very cheerful person.
The author of A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens, shows how Scrooge was a selfish person but when the four ghosts visited him he changed his ways. Ebenezer Scrooge doesn't know the true meaning of business, He believes that “Business”only concerns money. In A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens shows that one’s business in life is caring for others though the lessons that scrooge learns. Scrooge definition of business in Stave 1 is valuing money. According to A Christmas Carol on page 10 it states “It’s not my business, Scrooge Returns”.
On pages 52-53 it talks about the family he could of had if Scrooge would of ran after Belle. Instead he didn’t go after her, he didn’t live the happy life that he wanted, but he lived the sad, grumpy life he was in already. After all of the regret he had felt he wasn’t able to stand his own past anymore.
The Change of Scrooge “Feelings change, memories don’t.” Joel Alexander After visits from three ghosts, The Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Future, Ebenezer Scrooge, the protagonist in the novella, A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, is changed for the better. Each ghost makes an impact on him in several ways. The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge influential scenes from his younger days.
At the beginning of A Christmas Carol,Scrooge is mean, selfish, and greedy. He is mean, because on pg.9, he never donates to the poor, and he always yells at little kids. Scrooge is also selfish because on pg.12, he never pays a day wages for no work. They say “it's a poor excuse for picking a man’s pocket every twenty-fifth of december!”Also, another word is he is greedy,on pg.17, says he is caustic and cold as ever and never gave anything to anyone. He said “what do you want with me.
“The righteousness of the blameless keeps his ways straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness”(Prov. 11:5). The story, “A Christmas Carol”, is about a cold-hearted man named Scrooge who transforms himself into a jolly, kind man when three Ghosts teach Scrooge about the spirit of Christmas. In the story, Charles Dickens illustrates the theme of how no one is past redemption through the transformation of Scrooge’s personality by the lessons of the Spirits. At the beginning of the story, Scrooge’s selfish personality is revealed, and the Ghost of Christmas Past comes and shows him the memories and truth of his life long ago.
