Gatsby is the most responsible for the tragic ending of the novel, his own death. He ignored warnings from close friends about potential danger, refused to let the gardener drain the pool, and took blame for something he did not do, which all led to his murder. After Myrtle gets run over by a car and passes away, Nick believes he must warn Gatsby that her death will be traced back to him. Nick tells him to “go to Atlantic City for a week, or up to Montreal” (Fitzgerald 91) because he knows that the car used to kill Myrtle belongs to Gatsby and people will find out about it. Nick tries to look out for his best friend Gatsby, but unfortunately, Gatsby does not even take this warning into consideration and refuses to leave West Egg. Nick states, “He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do” (Fitzgerald 91). Gatsby’s love for Daisy makes every other thing and danger in this world irrelevant. All he cares about is Daisy, and he changed his whole life for her. Sadly, for Gatsby, his ignorance of Nick’s warning and his passionate love for Daisy ends up …show more content…
The gardener tells Gatsby, “I’m going to drain the pool today, Mr. Gatsby. Leaves’ll start falling pretty soon, and then there’s always trouble with the pipes” (Fitzgerald 94). Gatsby then tells him to not drain the pool because he has yet to use it this summer. The next day around 2 o’clock in the afternoon, Gatsby relaxes in the pool one time before it closes for the winter. While he enjoys his time in the pool, “the chauffeur—he was one of Wolfsheim’s protégés—heard the shots” (Fitzgerald 99). George Wilson kills Gatsby out of pure anger. Though keeping the pool filled for one more day seems unimportant and harmless, it contributes heavily to the death of Gatsby. If the pool had been drained already, Gatsby would have been inside his home safely at the time George came to kill him with much more
Gatsby turned out the way he did. Now, here is what starts the blame game for his death. In the beginning of the book, Nick (the narrator) moves from the middle west into West Egg to end up becoming Gatsby’s neighbor. Gatsby knew that his past lover was Nick’s cousin and Gatsby decides to invite Nick over to his enormous parties.
Even though Gatsby did have an affair with Daisy, she was still married to Tom and didn’t want to leave him; “Just tell [Tom] the truth... that you never loved him” (101). Gatsby expected that Daisy would leave, but at heart, Gatsby was something of her past, not a priority, and something she couldn't fully care about. Nick is at Gatsby's funeral, with only one other person to attend who isn’t Daisy: “I tried to think about Gatsby then for a moment, but he was already too far away, and I could only remember, without resentment, that Daisy hadn’t sent a message or a flower” (Fitzgerald 133). In the ending of the book, when Gatsby dies, Daisy does not care. Gatsby's life was thought to be one that promised wealth, success, and happiness but often led to disillusionment and
“He was clutching at some last hope and I couldn’t bear to shake him free” (Fitzgerald 148). He knew his dream was failing, but he just wanted to see a little longer if he could make it possible. It also shows how Nick truly cares about Gatsby, and wants the best for him even though he knows as well that everything is over. This feeling is shown again later on when Nick thinks “She vanished into her rich house, into her rich, full life, leaving Gatsby - nothing” (Fitzgerald 149). Even though Gatsby has everything anyone could ever hope for, everything that really mattered was Daisy.
Although she didn't end up seeing him the same way. As a result, when Nick gets ready to leave after being in the music room with Gatsby and Daisy to watch The Love Nest, he started to observe Gatsby’s body language and understood what he began to feel now that reality set in, he stated,”As I went over to say goodbye I saw that the expression of bewilderment had come back into Gatsby’s face, as though a faint of doubt had occurred to him as to the quality of his present happiness. Almost five years! There must have been moments where Daisy tumbled short of his dreams- not through her own fault but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion” (Fitzgerald 95). Gatsby realizes that his desire for having Daisy in his possession for the past five years wasn't what he expected.
Because Gatsby failed to realise this, he willingly sacrificed the true wealth of life found in the relationships such as his parents, disowning them for being poor and further his relationship with Daisy, his love laced with a deep obsession of money. Nick perceives that Gastby “must have felt that he had lost the old warm world, paid a high price for living too long with a single dream” (153). Eventually, when Gatsby meets the end of his life, he is left without any of the people he had interacted with, having paid the price in his pursuit of wealth. The only people who show up to the funeral are his father and Nick Carraway, two individuals who Gatsby had the potential of seeking the
So George tracks Gatsby back to the West Egg mansion, shoots Gatsby, who is lounging in a swimming pool, and then turns the gun on himself. The swaggering, careless Tom has brought all of these events into play, and in so doing, he has exposed the real George; underneath a thin coating of ashes, George is a desperate man who needs his life to follow a certain pattern. When Tom shreds that pattern to tatters, George can no longer make sense of his existence. Therefore, if Gatsby must die at the end of the novel, there is no one better suited to destroy him than George Wilson.
Doing this he put himself in position to either get arrested or in this case shot. Back to my last reason if he would’ve just left Daisy and Tom be, Tom would not of had the urge to tell the George Wilson details about the car, “That yellow car I was driving this afternoon wasn’t mine you hear.”, “It was a yellow car”(Fitzgerald 140). Therefore covering for Daisy, George knew exactly who’s car it was. Gatsby’s, and now George wants his revenge on him. George breaks into Gatsby’s house while he was in the pool and shot him multiple time until died, then shoots himself.
The American Dream: Survival or Death Less than twenty percent of Americans feel like they are living any part of the American Dream ( Carter ). In the history of the United States of America, the American Dream has been debated many times. But in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott. Fitzgerald; Fitzgerald illustrates the death of the American Dream.
As the weather grows cold, so does Gatsby; he is later found dead, floating in his pool. Gatsby's death is both
Gatsby had many tragedies in The Great Gatsby, but George Wilson also had tragedies in this story. George found out that his Wife, Myrtle Wilson, was having an affair. George saw the jewels that she had on and assumed she was having an affair. “‘I’ve got my wife locked in up there’”
Gatsby recognizes he is asking a lot from Nick and does not want to put him in a situation he does not want to be in. Moreover, he gives him an opportunity to refuse to help because he cares about Nick's feelings. He shows that he is not a selfish man since he is not forcing Nick to do anything. He also proves he is not self-centered when he helps Daisy. After Daisy hit and killed Myrtle, Gatsby promises that he will “say [he] was [driving]” (Fitzgerald 143).
However, the other time in the book when he uses violence is much more cruel than Tom’s actions. To avenge his wife, he tries to figure out who owns the yellow car that killed Myrtle. After doing that, he immediately shoots Gatsby, the owner of the car, with his gun upon finding him. After killing Gatsby, he then takes his own life; that is why “the gardener saw Wilson’s body...and the holocaust was complete” (Fitzgerald 173). At the time, Gatsby is swimming in his pool.
It’s better that the shock should all come at once. She stood it pretty well” (138). As Nick said, in his eyes he doesn’t care anyone except Daisy, her reaction was the only thing that mattered. Gatsby said these words shows that he actually even doesn’t realize his fault which surprises me. Gatsby lost his humanity while he is chasing his dream, he thinks a normal people’s life is useless.
The Great Gatsby “‘Hello!” I interrupted breathlessly. “Look here– this isn’t Mr. Gatsby. Mr.Gatsby’s dead.” There was a long silence on the other end of the wire followed by an exclamation… then a quick squawk as the connection was broken”(Fitzgerald 175).
A pool tinted red from the sap of life. A deflated air mattress floated meekly against the pool. The wounded mattress covered the deceased body of Jay Gatsby, the protagonist of “The Great Gatsby” written by Fitzgerald. His death sought by George Wilson, A widower who craved the twisted vengeance of his cheating wife
