Stephen King’s Cujo is definitely not a book for all ages, but it is appropriate for students in high school. By the time you get to high school, you’ve already been exposed to foul language and violence. Reading this as a 10th grader, I had no challenge in reading the book, it was a fairly easy read and did not take very long to read. Swearing is used frequently throughout the novel, maybe even excessively in some scenes. In particular, almost every time Gary Pervier speaks he swears. Within his first introduction to the novel, he uses curse words over fifteen times. (King 33-35). However, being in high school, there are students in school that swear just as much as Gary Pervier, if not more, every day. Also, the violence or gruesome scenes …show more content…
As I mentioned, swearing, violence, and sex references are a major component of the book. These reasons are typically noted when schools decide to ban it. In 1985, just four years after being published, Cujo was banned by the Board of Education in Washington County, Alabama for using “unacceptable language” and being “pornographic”. It was then removed from all school libraries in Washington County (“Challenge/Banning Factors”). An occasion more recent includes the 1998 incident, where the principal of Cook County High School in Prineville, Oregon, Cris Yeager, threw the book in the trash. He claimed, “It’s not what most parents would want their children to read.” A parent in the school district, Sue Baca, cited profanity, violence, and sexual content as justifications for banning Cujo. She then proceeded to say, “I object to any book by Stephen King as he writes horror fiction, which has no value,” (Foerstel 259). Cujo does include all of these age sensitive topics and includes them frequently. The first time Gary Pervier is introduced he says, “A little heat ain’t gonna kill ya. Ain’t gonna kill me either, but it b****es the s*** outta my hemorrhoids. Well, I don’t give a s*** if they get as big as f***ing golf balls.” (King 35). This is just one occasion of the amount of profanity, this quote being particularly vulgar. Also, sexual …show more content…
Some of the inappropriate profanity, violence, and sexual content is not as inappropriate for students in high school who have already been exposed to content of such nature. Also, there is some value that can be seen from this book. First, Cujo is an entertaining book. It has a very interesting plot with many twists and turns that always keeps the reader trying to figure out what is going to happen next. Stephen King does a good job of making the novel scary, but not scary enough that people would not enjoy it. Also, King is a good writer and his novels show that with their literary composition. He includes good vocabulary, a variety of paragraph and sentence lengths, and creates a setting that makes the reader feel like they are a part of the story. Many horror novels also include a discrete and often ignored life lesson about fears. Cujo showed that having fears was normal and dealing with those fears only came through confrontation. Donna Trenton was terrified that Cujo was going to kill her if she stepped out of the car, especially since she had already been bitten on the leg and stomach by him, but she she still got out of the car, grabbed the baseball bat, and killed the dog. Cujo also sets a somewhat realistic horror story as well. Unlike a horror novel with ghosts and witches, this included a friendly dog that got rabies, and due the psychological damage caused by rabies, he killed several people.
So I do like the book because of the morality development fact, the overflow of racial comments and actions outweigh the educational value of the morality development. I do not think this book should be taught in today 's school system and i think we need to move on to better
Challenged Book: Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days In L.A. In the book, Always Running: La Vida Loca: Gang Days In L.A, written by Luis J. Rodriguez, the main character Luis Rodriguez, experiences a crazy early teen life of being a gang member in East Los Angeles. Luis Rodriguez describes La Vida Loca, which means “the crazy life”, through the gang culture, the endless shootings he witnessed, beatings, arrests, and also through murder, drugs, and suicide.
Currently, one of the greatest controversies in today's school system surrounds whether or not certain books should be banned from school libraries. For instance, some educators believe that books that contain language, drugs, and violence can aid in teaching children to think for themselves. Meanwhile, many parents feel that books containing language, drugs, and violence need to be banned, to protect children from these strenuous ideas and information. One of the books that have been banned is Mexican White Boy. Those who support the banning of this book often point out the sensitive topics within.
Do you think teenagers should read a story that has killing or a lot of inappropriate content and violence? Others think it's good to have them read it but I think teens shouldn't be reading this because “The Call of The Wild” and “After an outpouring of literary outrage, N.C. Country Reconsiders Book Ban” prove to me that these books are bad.
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
Censorship in America is often debated. Erin Manning, texas-based writer explains that the American Library Association chooses to censor certain books because of “inappropriate content” and “second rate writing”(Manning 1). Parents attempt to protect their children from the outside world, by limiting their exposure to age appropriate language. When parents do this, their children’s knowledge of the outside world may be limited to what parents let their child view. Although some parents may feel that their child needs filtered information and entertainment, others believe that children and teens need to be shown uncensored content.
In the 21st century, many books are challenged and banned for their content, some of these include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Animal Farm, and Fahrenheit 451. Many of the reasons given for banning are the same. The reasons include violence, language, symbols, and religion. This makes it very difficult for educational professionals; which books should be taught and which ones should be banned, when does protection become unnecessary censorship? Although Fahrenheit 451 shows some dark themes such as banning books, disregard for human life, and suicide, it should be included in the school curriculum because it shows the dystopian future that awaits the world if the events in the book become a reality.
Books can create portals to different life experiences and encourage reading. A few schools and libraries have challenged the educational value of some books, however, therefore leading them to eventually be prohibited in a particular place. Each reason may be different depending on the book and the location of the exclusions. Books are icons of literature and their value should outshine the occasionally offensive topic. Be that as it may, there are multiple reasons why books should be taught and included in a curriculum.
The book sheds a tear as it is banned by administration for students to read. The Catcher in the Rye should not be banned for summer reading for incoming sophomores because of its “explicit” content. After high school, out in the real world, life experiences are not censored or banned to protect you. You must experience life and all that comes with it.
Why Catcher in the Rye Should be Banned Catcher in the Rye should not be included in the English department curriculum at North Quincy High. In Catcher in The Rye the main protagonist Holden Caulfield is portrayed as an emotionally unstable high school student who has been kicked out multiple schools for his behavior and poor grades. This book has already been banned in multiple schools for its use of inappropriate language, sexual implications, and Holden being an unfit model for adolescent readers, and for these reasons it should also be banned from our curriculum. Throughout Catcher in the Rye there were multiple instances in which inappropriate languages was used from various characters and Holden himself.
(cbldf.org). Because of this challenge to the book, the principal decided that all questionable content regarding student curriculum will be disclosed to parents beforehand. In 2003, the book was challenged and then completely banned in George County, Mississippi. The copious amounts of profanity and sexual content lead to this unfortunate conclusion.
The beginning of the book, the hook, was exciting and encouraged me to read more. Unfortunately, despite the book's good sides, there was much violence in some instances. Even though some of the cases make the book even better, some of the violence seems too much. Overall, a reader feels good after reading the book and would recommend it to others, especially those who enjoy action and
The novel Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson is one of the thousands of books that have been banned or challenged in the last 100 years. Written in 1977, the novel has been controversial due to the subject matters of the concept of death, inappropriate language, and religion. In classrooms and libraries all over the world, this book keeps on popping up on the banned-book list. It is because of these subjects in the book that people believe it teaches the readers, mostly younger kids, inadequate morals and sets bad examples for students. The novel Bridge to Terabithia should not be banned due to its informative subject topics and positive impact on readers of all ages.
Some school districts have banned Fahrenheit 451 from
These include: Removal from school libraries in Randolph, NY for violent nature in 1975. Removal from Alton, OK for violence and language in 1975, removed from the required reading list at Westport, MA public schools in 1977, banned from the St. Anthony, Idaho Freemont High School classrooms in 1978 for violence also, the instructor was fired for teaching the book. Additionally, the book was challenged at the Merrimack, N.H High School in 1982, and also challenged as part of the curriculum in an Aberdeen, Washington High School honors English class because the book promotes "secular humanism. " In each case, the premise of the ban or challenge was based upon either language or violence, but never did the schools or challengers take into account the audience and what they had already been exposed to prior to reading the
