Distinguished as an important part in the pivotal movement that changed culture and art, the Renaissance helped remove Europe out of the Dark Ages. “Beginning in the 14th century and coming to an end in the 17th, this “golden age” swept the continent, culminating in two distinctive yet unified art movements: the Italian Renaissance and the Northern Renaissance” (8 Renaissance Artists...). Many may ask, what was so imperative about this time? What made it a pivotal movement? The artists of this time are what created the central turning point. People think mainly about the Italian Renaissance since the artists of that time became more popular. Such artists are Raphael, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, and many more. However, the Northern Renaissance also embodied many great artists such as Pieter Bruegel The Elder, Jan Van Eyck, and Hieronymus Bosch. Michelangelo’s most famous works include “The David” and “Pieta” statues, along with the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. He is one of the few artists of that time that became wealthy and had a legendary status of a master of the arts before passing away.

There was many Renaissance that took place and two very popular ones were the French Renaissance and the British Renaissance during 1500-1700. It took place in the “quarter century between 1495 and the death of Leonardo da Vinci in 1519 and Raphael in 1520” (Kleiner 600). During these times, artist reached what is now known as “fine arts” and their artwork gave them prestige because it paired with the high status that only poetry had held. The Mona Lisa is one of todays most famous artworks and the artist (Leonardo da Vinci) epitomized the term ‘the renaissance man’. The Renaissance saw the rebirth in European culture among the Middle Ages and through the Modern Times. In Italy, the city was wealthy enough to support the upturn in art that allowed artists to receive patrons that sponsored them to produce specific work.
