Witches and Wiccans are commonly mistaken for one another, due to their similar names and practices. The word “witch” comes from the Old English words “wicca” and “wicce”, referring to male and female persons who did witchcraft. What we know as Wicca now is a religion, whereas witchcraft is a spiritual practice. Due to the fact that they are commonly confused (there are sometimes even Wiccans who are confused about the distinction), I stopped calling myself a Wiccan. I have most of the beliefs of Wicca, but I call myself, simply, a pagan. Many of the books you will find on Wicca are also written by witches who are Wiccans, which means that their view of Wicca usually involves witchcraft. Wicca was founded in 1954 by Gerald B. Gardner, who created the religion after he was accepted into a coven of witches in England and migrated to America. The religion is based in part off of the Northern European pagan religion, referring to the worship of a Goddess of fertility and her consort, a Horned God. The Gods are not given names, but they are often called The Lord and The Lady. The religion of Wicca has two deities, one male and one female. The two Gods create what is known to Wiccans as “The Divine”. Everything on Earth is composed of The Divine, and we all have the Divine in us. Some people say that everyone has a little bit of both Gods inside their souls, which makes up the balance of life. Since Wicca is so based in balance and talks about the Divine in everything, it is not a far stretch to say that it’s a nature-based religion, which it is. The religion of Wicca is all about living in harmony with everything around you, which is something that is talked about a great deal in the “laws” of the religion, called the Wiccan Rede. The Wiccan Rede is a set of rules that all Wiccans must live by in order to be Wiccans. A famous and frequently quoted part of the Wiccan Rede states that “An it harm none, do as ye will,” which is where one of the biggest distinctions between Wicca and witchcraft comes: Wiccans have a pacifist …show more content…
If you hurt someone or something, you’re putting negative energy out, and that same negative energy will come back to you three-fold. Likewise, if you help someone, the positive energy will come back to you times three. Telling fortunes, showing peoples faces in glasses, enchantments, and healing the sick are some of the things people who practiced witchcraft claimed to be able to do. New Englanders often turned to people who could do these things for favors and referred to them as "cunning folk" (pg.107). The New Englanders didn't see any harm in using their occult powers for there own good, when in fact these people were in contact with the devil. They did not see it that way but they were indeed risking being banished to hell.
At some point during the 15th century, Witchcraft was a normal part of everyday life. Witches accompanied religious ministers to help the ill or to deliver a baby. They were regarded as having spiritual power in their communities. When something went wrong, no one questioned the ministers or the power of the witchcraft. Instead, they questioned whether the witch intended to inflict harm or not.
”(10). In contrast to other religions the God and Goddess are not viewed as distant entities, they are “both within ourselves and manifest in all nature”(4). Because they are present in nature, time spent outside and engaging with the natural world is considered a ritual within itself. A ritual such as this, is utilized as an opportunity to expand knowledge to optimize personal power and to further connect with the Earth. As a result, Wiccans tend to be heavily involved in the study and concerns of ecology.
Many of the characters get overly worked up in the possibility of evil spirits and such ideas that they forget the other half of their belief that tells them that there is a God looking down upon them and protecting them. It is human nature to stress about the bad to the point where all good is blocked out, even if it overpowers the bad. It is very possible that people would bend their own wills through witchcraft out of fear. It is human nature to try to pick the lesser of two evils, in this society, witchcraft is the ultimate evil, and even though it is just an illusion, the citizens are frightened of the repercussions of not admitting to witchcraft and being hung. This can be found in the instance where Tituba is found guilty.

Wicca is a pagan nature-based, fertility-oriented religion, and although it has many roots to the “old ways” and ancient practices, Wicca as it currently stands is a fairly new religion, technically started by Gerald Gardner in the 1940s. Gardner reconstructed and reinvented ancient beliefs and practices to fit a modern age. Wiccans observe the turn of the seasons and the cycle of the moon. Wiccans embrace the existence of two main deities: the Goddess and the God. The moon and its changing phases are often considered the embodiment of the Goddess, while the sun is said to symbolize the God.

Many traditional Cherokees believe that after one dies, his or her soul often continues to live on as a ghost (Cherokee Indian Religion). They are supposed to have the ability to materialize where some but not all can see them. More fundamental beliefs that they follow is that good is rewarded, and evil is punished, and witchcraft among the Cherokee does not resemble that of non-Indian cultures (Cherokee Indian Religion).
