This is relevant to the theme of the story because of the fact that she knew no good would come to her if she did this, but she did it for the generations to come anyways. Another way that Melba showed bravery was when she took the powerful weapon that is her brain and used it to think of a quick way to protect herself. Melba knew that if she used reverse psychology on the people who tried to make her life harder then they would do they might change their actions to being somewhat nice to her. This is just one example of the way Melba’s amazing brain worked. According to Melba, “I got hit across the back with a tennis racket. I managed to smile and say, ‘Thank you’” (Beals 169). Meaning that when someone attacked her in one way or another and instead of getting upset and lashing out she simply said thank you showing them that they're attempt to not only ruin her day but also her life were nothing but a mere stick blocking her path to her dreams. This shows that Melba had the intelligence to know that when she did one thing it would have a certain reaction. She used this knowledge to figure out that if she said thank you when people verbally or physically abused her then they would get annoyed to the point where they would stop bothering her. Another way that Melba shows her intelligence is when she talks about how until she stopped facing injustice she wouldn't stop fighting for the end of it. “Until I am welcomed everywhere as an equal simply because I am human, I remain a warrior on a battlefield that I must not leave” (Beals preface). Meaning that until the day came

In addition to this, perseverance is an important theme as well. Life comes with challenges, but persevering helps you become stronger in the end. After being attacked countless times, Melba continued to persevere and she never gave up on what she wanted, a better education. Furthermore, racism is one of the most prominent themes throughout the memoir.
Melba shares her story and what she did to overcome the intense obstacles that tried to prevent her from an equal education.
