Buddhism consists of a belief in peace, unity, respect, and self-discovery through humility and honesty. Following these ideals creates a more knowledgeable and aware individual and society. L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz reflects on these themes of Buddhism through the use of allegorical settings to create a story about a young girl trying to find her way home. After deciding to run away because of the evil neighbour Mrs. Gilch, Dorothy is caught in a tornado, thrown around, and wakes up to find herself in a foreign land.
It’s a scene engraved into the western world’s collective memory: a pigtailed girl in red slippers, skipping along a yellow brick road with a scarecrow, a tin man, and a lion. This image, from the book “The Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum and the 1939 film of the same name, represents the epic of the modern age. Whereas in ancient times, we had Gilgamesh or King Arthur as our gallant hero, now we have a little girl from a farm in Kansas. At first glance, this simple story of a young girl lost in a magic land could not compete with the great tales of old. However, this epic shares more than a few similarities with this seemingly childish
Yes, in my opinion Dorothy is the heroin in The Wizard of Oz. She is the reason that the Wicked Witch of the East is dead, she is the reason that the Wicked Witch of the West is dead, and she is the reason that Oz 's identity was revealed. Dorothy 's presence played a huge part in the novel. To begin with, The Wicked Witch of the East 's death was caused by Dorothy. On Dorothy 's way to the Emerald City, while she was flying, her house landed on the Wicked Witch.
There were many ideas of populism that are present in both the book and the movie “The Wizard of Oz” The main character, Dorothy, was representative of the common farmer. Farmers during that time were mainly populists, and had populist beliefs. The populists believed that the gold standard was not good. They believed that they should have money backed by silver which would lower the value of the money, but it would also make it to where there is more money in circulation. In the movie and book Dorothy was walking on the yellow brick road.
The musical fantasy film “The Wizard of Oz”, produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, features Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Throughout the film, these characters act as foils to Dorothy, the main character. Toto, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion reflect on Dorothy as her reminder of home, intelligence, heart, and courage. Toto, Dorothy’s dog, is the only belonging that travels with her on her journey through Oz. Throughout her quest, he keeps her constantly reminded of her home, and the fact that she needs to return to the people she loves.
The Wicked Witch of the West sees them coming and sends out wolves, crows, bees and monkeys to destroy them. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were broken into pieces. Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion were captured and taken to her palace. Dorothy was to be a slave in the palace. Being meek and not knowing the power of the Silver Slippers she did what the Witch commanded.
The wizard of Oz tells the tale of an orphaned teenager named Dorothy. After a horrible encounter with her neighbor Miss Gulch, who tortures her dog, Dorothy begins to dream of life what her life might be like over the rainbow. Miss Gulch displeased with how the situation turned out, showed up with an order the following day to take Toto to the sheriff and kill him. However, Toto escapes from Miss Gulch’s confinement and returns to Dorothy where the two decide to run away from home without Miss Gulch’s knowing. In the midst of their escape, a cyclone appears and carries the two to another land known as the land of Oz.
The Wizard of Oz is a musical about a young girl, named Dorothy, who lives on a farm in Kansas. She desperately wants to get away, and decides to run away from home. After she meets a peddler who convinces her to go back home, she ends up going back home to find a “cyclone” heading right for her house. Dorothy, her dog, Toto, and her house
Scarecrow is a character foil of Dorothy because he is intelligent. Scarecrow demonstrates his intelligence in The Wizard of Oz, when he told Dorothy to tease the apple
The Wizard of Oz shows that he is William McKinley when he says to Dorothy, "I'm really a very good man, but I'm a very bad Wizard, I must admit." (Baum). This quote shows how he never really wanted to be the ruler of Oz. Similar to William McKinley whom never wanted to President. Another way that we can see how the Wizard of Oz is William McKinley is his action.
How the Production of the Wizard of Oz differs from the Novel Charles Baldwin The film and novel differ the most in their characterization and the honoring of the fairy tale rules. The first way that the film and the novel differ is in the characterization of the various characters in the tale. The novel briefly describes each character while the film gives all the major characters dual roles: one for reality and one for Dorothy's fantasy. For example in the book dorothy has magic slippers but they are silver and in the movie for more a shock to the audience for color the producers make the slippers are ruby colored.
The Wizard of Oz has revealed to be an exceptionally well thought out film when analysed. The film has made use of stylistic elements such as colour, light, sound and mise-en-scene which coincide with the various twists and turns of the plot as Dorothy moves from Kansas, to Oz, and back again. In The Wizard of Oz, the directors have employed the use of different unique editing techniques despite being an early film. It is obvious that the audience is able to notice the absence of colour in the beginning and ending of the film. The audience is able to identify the mood and overall feeling for Dorothy when she is in her family farm in Kansas.
Lastly, The Wizard of Oz is the character who known by other witches, sorceressess and wizards as the Great Wizard. Yet , it is understood that he is just an illustrator. When he wants from Dorothy and her companions to kill the Wicked Witch of the West in return for his favours and they actually did this after several adventures, Dorothy and her companions come to the Wizard of Oz again, Dorothy tells him the death of Wicked Witch and reminds him the promise which he gave to them. He tells them to come back tomorrow but Lion gets mad and give a so violent roar that Toto accidently takes down a screen. Behind that, there was "a little old man, with a bald head and wrinkled face" (Baum 84).
In The Wizard of Oz by Victor Fleming, 1939, specifically during the beginning scene, Dorothy was in sync with the setting. Dorothy was in the proper placement of the props around her, adding to the feelings of her reflecting the place she is in. The background eluded to the idea that she is far away from the golden spherical instrument that 's supposed to hold a globe, on the window sill in the background. There 's also an interesting painting below the window sill, it 's a golden band of boxes; this could be the representation of how Dorothy is gonna get to where she 's going, the yellow brick road. However, the crystal ball seems to be the most prominent part of the scene, the contrast of Dorothy 's position enhanced the feeling to the viewer that Dorothy is scared and alone.
