World War II resulted in many casualties due to the massive increase of the United States military which caused a Total War. Total War is when all resources are used in order to help the war effort no matter what damage it may cause. World War 2 can be considered a total war to an extent in many ways. A lot of products were used during the war and many different people such as women and disabled people were vital assets to the war itself. As the chaos of world war II was going on total war changed the home front which affected people 's way of living. Rationing was introduced due to the low income of imported food. Every household registered with their local shops and the shopkeeper was provided with enough food for each registered customer. The types of goods that were rationed were gasoline, bacon, butter, sugar,etc. Coupons for rationing were distributed to families for the different goods being rationed. Some people felt rationing was unfair because some of the goods such as eggs, butter, and milk they felt could be obtained in rural areas without coupons. Rationing was introduced on May 14, 1942, it was so there would be a cut on buyer spending and this would lead to an increase in savings, which in turn could be invested in war loans. During the war a great amount of luxury goods was not produced including toys, pyjamas and lawnmowers and some other items were rationalised. Such as in 1942, June 12, clothing limited to 112 coupons per year, June 3, tea was limited to 5lbs every 5 weeks, in august 29, sugar 2lbs per two weeks, in 1943 june7, butter was limited to 1lb per fortnight and 1944 January 14, meat was rationalised to two lbs per week. The lack of food is a dreadful hardship the soldiers have to deal with. This hardship brings about not just hunger but many other factors. Lucky prisoners would find food lying around the camps or they would have people in their workplaces sneak them food. At night, prisoners would be given bread and a small piece of meat or cheese. The bread they were given was supposed to last them all night until the morning, so people would try to hide them in their beds, while they were asleep. The small rations were just meant to keep the prisoners alive so they weren’t completely starving. Many thousands of prisoners died from starvation or the illnesses caused by the lack of nutrition.
