Different Gods, Similar Stories Throughout history many different myths, tales and legends were told repetitively down generations of families. Some of these myths include the story of Zeus created in Greek Mythology and the tale of Thor formed in Norse Mythology. Although both gods are different in many ways, they each share very many similar aspects as well. In Greek Mythology Zeus is the lightning/thunder god. Zeus is the son of Rhea and Cronus, who were rulers of the Titans. Before he was born his father had consumed all of his sisters and brothers in fear that they would over throw him from ruler. Finally, when Zeus was born his mother kept him in hiding from Cronus so he could grow up to be a powerful god. When fully grown he set his brothers and sisters free from darkness of Cronus’s stomach, and together they overthrew him from leader. He lives on the top of Mount Olympus along with his two brothers, three sisters and eight children and is considered the god of all gods. He is the son of Odin and Jord. Thor lives in Asgard among the Asgard people, and his family which consists of his parents, his half-brothers and his blood brother named Loki who is also his arch enemy. Thor also has three children, a daughter named Thrud, and two sons named Magni and Modi. Unlike Zeus where Thor comes from he is not considered to be the main god, or leader of the gods. However, Thor is considered the protector of all gods and mankind. Thor is mainly known for his hammer which controls the thunder and lightning. Thor Wignutt may seem like the average eleven year old boy, but Michael Chabon made sure that his character had a much deeper meaning. Throughout the story, the author makes many references to people and settings from Norse Mythology and Native American Folklore. In the case of Thor Wignutt, he is very similar to the Norse Mythology god Thor. Of course their names are exactly the same, but there is more meaning behind their personalities.

The story of the Greek god Zeus begins with his father, the supreme god Kronos. According to an article from the Columbia Encyclopedia, one of his children was prophesied to overthrow Kronos; thus, because he did not want to be overthrown, Kronos ate each one of his children that his wife, Rhea, birthed. The article continues to say that Rhea replaced Zeus with a rock inside of a cloth, so that Kronos would eat the rock instead of the baby. Zeus survived his father’s horrible habit and, when he was older, convinced his father to regurgitate all of his siblings. Zeus and his siblings then rose up against their father prosperously.
In Thor: Ragnarok is Thor's adoptive brother and is portrayed as a recurring antagonist of Loki. He is first depicted as Odin, ruler of Asgard after banishing Odin to Earth. Thor realizes this deception and forces Loki to help him find his father. Later in the film, Loki allies with Thor to defeat his sister Hela, who threatens to destroy Asgard. In both works, Loki is characterized as a complex figure who embodies both cunning and chaos.

Because of this, Loki was able to bend this new-found authority to his will, and his mischievous antics began to become more serious. He was even able to steal Brisingamen, the most extravagant necklace in existence, from Odin’s very own wife, Frigga (“Loki”). Loki’s lust for power and attention would soon come to an abrupt end when he committed a crime so drastic that the gods would never forgive him. Loki had grown jealous of Balder, “the god of light and peace” (“Loki”), so he decided to formulate a plot to murder him. Loki was then punished for his actions because he had murdered a god loved by all.
Zeus was the youngest son of six children from Cronus and Rhea. Zeus’ five other siblings were swallowed by Cronus to ensure him from being overthrown. When Zeus was born, Gaia and Rhea tricked Cronus by switching the infant with a stone. Cronus then swallowed the stone thinking it was Zeus, however he was hidden away and raised behind the scenes. When Zeus reached manhood he forced Cronus to disgorge his siblings and then released Cronus’ siblings from Tartarus.
