National Association for Ethnic Studies

North Central Sociological Association

Order Sons of Italy in America

Founded June 22, 1905 in New York City, Order Sons of Italy in America is the oldest and largest Italian-American association in the United States. The organization consists of 500,000 individuals from corporate executives and political leaders to factory workers and retirees. The OSIA mission is to preserve Italian heritage through philanthropic and social-educational programs that provide for the youth opportunities to learn about their heritage and to gain access to higher education. The web site points to Italian Heritage that gives a brief history of the Order and a biography of the founder, Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro; describes the Commission for Social Justice or the anti-defamation arm of the OSIA; and explains the work of the Sons of Italy Foundation which is a philanthropic institution that was established to preserve Italian American culture through educational and study programs both here and in Italy. In addition the OSIA web page has links to membership forms, national officers, 21 state chapters, headquarters staff, library, publications, and current happenings.

"...established in 1929, [PSA] is the professional association of sociologists for the western region of the United States and Canada: Hawaii, Montana, Oregon California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Washington, British Columbia, and Alberta. Our membership includes faculty and students working at colleges and universities located throughout the United States and Canada, and especially those who live in the western region of those countries. Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction

National Italian American Foundation

Located in Washington, DC, The National Italian American Foundation is the major advocacy group for the fifteen million Italian Americans who comprise the country's fifth largest ethnic group. The purpose of the NIAD is to preserve and protect Italian American heritage and culture by working with Congress and the White House to facilitate the appointment of Italian Americans in government positions; funding young Italian American students and businessmen and women so they can achieve their career goals; encouraging the teaching of the Italian language and culture in highschools and colleges; monitoring the portrayal of Italian Americans in the media; and developing cultural and economic ties between Italy and America. The site has links to staff email addresses, scholarships and grants, research guides, and outside resources that are part of the NIAF youth institute.
