In “DREAM On,” by Mark Krikorian, he states that the DREAM Act will not work. Using Toulmin’s system to analyze Krikorian’s effectiveness of his argument, makes it easier to understand the impact that was received from his words. Krikorian is writing to those that agree with his way of thinking. Toulmin’s system consists of an enthymeme, a warrant, grounds, backing, conditions of rebuttal, and qualifiers. These can be used to evaluate the logical structure of Krikorian’s argument.
In today’s world, relying on luck and opportunity by chance to elevate your professional career has transgressed into a distant fantasy. Rather, one must self-advocate in order to reach the heights most only aspire to reach. Now, pen and paper does not get you as far as does vocalization. If two people with identical resumes apply to your law firm, but one sweeps you off your feet with their interview question responses while the other shyly responds to your inquiries, who do you hire? Exactly.
Despite being a realitively simple presentation, the argument is clearly a Toulmin argument. It's making an adversarial and challeging statement about the influence of corporations in America. It wants the audience to question their own stance, but it is not even attempting to stay in a middle ground where another point of view is given.
The Rogerian outline of an essay creates an effective argument in the aspect that it acknowledges two opposing viewpoints of the matter in an unbiased way. By doing this, the author is able to let the reader understand other perspectives towards the topic, without offending or disregarding their stance.. Creating a compromise, or a common ground, between the two lets the audience shift from their original views and expand their thoughts. This way of formatting an argument is useful when discussing emotional topics. If arguing for animal testing, for example, it would benefit the author if they used the Toulmin method because it is so controversial and emotional, seeing that it deals with the lives of living creatures.
Patients often do not receive adequate education or instruction when they are prescribed a new medication3. This can lead to the patient being confused about the medication and being uncomfortable with taking it. One other issue regarding communication are the possibilities of alternatives. Alternatives could be a cheaper version of the drug or just a different dosage form. Patients should always be given an adequate opportunity to discuss alternatives and concerns about a new medication with their provider.

When instructed to take medicines prescribed by doctors, there is rarely any second thought put in before taking those pills. Knowing the side effects of your medications and knowing proper dosages is something that should be done religiously. Opiate overdoses have become one of the leading causes of death in America, this is largely due to doctors not following policy and prescribing addictive narcotics for inappropriate ailments, which leads to addiction, and can destroy the lives of those around them. Prescription drugs are highly addictive, and for the most part, easily available if you know someone with a prescription. Like I mentioned before, I think doctors need to try and be more aware if there is a problem with misusing a drug, but it is not entirely their fault if somewhere someone goes wrong. It is in my opinion, kind of a tough subject, because in many cases, people really do need the drugs for pain or whatever the issue may be. Doctors can’t simply cut off a patient that really does need the prescription. In summary, I think doctors need to try to be more aware of their patients, but people sometimes it isn’t that easy so people need to have more restraint.
