Relationships, lies, murder, conviction. These are all aspects that come into play when talking about the January 13th, 1999 murder of high school student Hae Min Lee. Adnan Syed, Hae’s 17-year-old ex-boyfriend was convicted of her murder in 2000. The problem with this is that the only evidence the state had to convict Adnan was the stories told by others, specifically someone named Jay who was with Adnan for some of the day Hae went missing and had possession of Adnan’s car and cell phone. He claims Adnan made him come pick him up after the murder was committed and assist him in burying Hae’s body. This story alone ultimately convicted Adnan. No physical evidence was ever found. Reporter Sarah Koenig realized the patchy story of this case …show more content…
Putting these circumstances aside, it was said by many that the relationship was pretty typical and Adnan got over the breakup easily. This was said by teachers and friends of both Hae and Adnan. One of Hae’s friends, Becky, explained the relationship as “just a silly, teenage, high school, relationship” (Koenig “The Breakup”) which proves that Adnan was not as upset as the prosecution made him out to be at trial. Another notable aspect is that after Hae and Adnan broke up, Hae got in a small car accident and asked Adnan to come help her, her new boyfriend Don also showed up and confirms that him and Adnan had a cordial meeting and explains that they talked for 10 to 15 minutes even after the car situation had been figured out (Koenig “What We Know”). If Adnan was really that broken up about the breakup, he would not have been so friendly towards the new guy who seemed to take his place in Hae’s life. One of Adnan’s best friends Saad stated in episode 2 of the podcast named “The Breakup” that Adnan had been talking to and dating multiple other girls and was “a player” just a month after him and Hae broke up, which shows that he was in no way obsessed with Hae and therefore had no reason to want to kill her. It has been argued by Hae’s friend Aiesha that the relationship was slightly obsessive on Adnan’s part, but since the couple had to keep their relationship a secret from their families as explained earlier, they wanted to be sure they spent as much time as possible together. Although some behaviors exhibited during the relationship seemed slightly overpowering, overall Hae and Adnan had a very typical relationship and there is no proof that the breakup was anything but a normal high school split, which gives absolutely no reason for anyone to believe Adnan would have killed Hae because
When Sarah says “ The state said Adnan was guilt-ridden about lying to his family about Hae “ ( Koenig “Serial” episode 2 ) This shows that Adnan had feelings about how he kept keeping his relationship a secret between his friends and family. Adnan being “ Guilt-ridden” could have caused him to be so frustrated it led to violence after the break up which could have also led to Hae’s death. Not only did he affect his relationship with Hae but with his parents who could have lost Adnan’s trust by not telling his parent also got him more frustrated to the limit to where there is violence. Another thing that may have got Adnan to be so violent was Adnan lying and feeling so guilty that he couldn’t take it
Adnan is an a 18 year old boy who was born in the US but his parents are from the Middle East . He used to attend Woodlawn High School where also the 17 year ex-girlfriend went to . Jay Wilds is a key witness in this case , I’ll explain his roll on this later. This story is very interesting because we really don’t know if he’s guilty or not .
" After the funeral, when he [Ethan] saw her [Zeena] preparing to go away, he seized with an unreasoning dread of being left alone on the farm; and before he knew what he was doing he had asked her to stay with him." (36) Ethan first met Zeena
Ethan would quietly lament this loss for as long as he lives. Not fully being able to express his true nature, a man with a refined mind who can’t show the world how he feels, and what he’s is passionate about. This can also be shown when the narrator states “His unfinished studies had given form to this sensibility and even in his unhappiest moments field and sky spoke to him with a deep and powerful persuasion”(Wharton 11). Second is Ethan hastily marring Zeena when she came to take care of his mother when she became sick, throughout the book you can easily pick up on the disconnect between the two. Although it is reasonable why he did so.
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, you are here because one person in this courtroom decided to take law into her own hands. The defendant, Mrs. Dominique Stephens, murdered the man that she vowed to love. This sole act by the defendant is violation of all morals and her husband’s right to live. Afterwards, she even felt guilty about this violation of justice and called the cops on herself, and she later signed a written statement stating that she is guilty of the murder of Mr. Donovan Stephens. Then the defendant later recanted this statement and said that she only killed Mr. Stephens in self defense.
This was quite the battle for Adnan Syed, a young oriental male who was accused of murdering his long-time girlfriend in January of 1999. Hae-Min Lee, Adnan’s girlfriend, went missing in January and her body was found buried in a local park 3 weeks later. Adnan Syed is innocent of killing Hae-Min Lee because of three reasons: Cristina Gutierrez, Adnan’s lawyer, failed to put him in a position to win the trial, Jay is not an effective witness, and the window of time does not match up. Adnan is not at fault
But when Hae was murdered, Jay didn’t have the video store job, making this piece of information not useful in trial. These abnormalities weren’t unknown when he was tried, the detectives handling the case excused pieces of evidence that made Adnan look innocent to win a case, putting an innocent teenager in prison for
Anya Schultz, the author of a review titled Serial: A Captivating New Podcast, works to show how multiple narratives and stories can be manipulated and sometimes vastly misinterpreted. Serial, an intriguing, enthralling podcast hosted by Sarah Koenig, tells the story of Hae Min Lee, a young, beautiful, high school senior who was murdered in 1999. Lee 's case, as Koenig and Schultz point out, has a few missing pieces of information that were never accounted for. For example, how did the jury come to the conclusion that Lee 's ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed, was truly guilty? Why did Syed 's lawyer forget to mention the letter from his acquaintance Asia McClain that could have polished his alibi?
Adnan Syed was a big guy who lived in Baltimore the location of low-income immigrants was convicted in the case of killing Hae Min Lee his ex-girlfriend on January 13, 1999. Who was described as a beautiful athletic girl, smart and responsible. Hae’s body was found February 9, 1999, in Leakin Park by a maintenance guy named Mr.S.The cause of Hae’s death was strangled to death. Adnan was arrested February 28, 1999, for her murder. The state thinks because Adnan is an EMT he would know how to strangle and revive.
”(Wharton 3). Because of his loneliness, he asked Zeena to marry him without thinking it through. He had no feelings for her and desperately hoped it would make him feel better. While being married to Zeena, his unhappiness peaked and caused him to fall in love with another girl who was the Fromes’ maid, Mattie Silver. Romance was in the air and most definitely not between Zeena and Ethan.
“Adnan chose to dance with Hae rather than Stephanie breaking the tradition of having the king dance with the queen”(Koenig, “The Breakup”).This shows that Adnan was in love with Hae long before he even knew much about her. Makes me think anything Hae did to upset Adnan would have consequences. “Adnan got pulled off the dance floor by his parents in front of the whole school” (Koenig, “The Breakup”). This makes me think Hae was embarrassed by his parents and she might’ve had second thoughts about this relationship. “We used to argue a lot”(Koenig, The Breakup) said Shamim Rahman, Adnan’s mother.
This same process repeated with Zeena. When she got sick, he began to feel lonely and fell in love with Mattie. This also would not have happened if Zeena didn’t get sick and stop talking with Ethan.
Pride and Jealousy are very powerful things! Some people will go to the farthest limits to preserve their own ego and selfish desires. The Serial Podcast by Sarah Koenig is about the very complex murder of Hae Min Lee on January 13th, 1999. Many different people are brought into the Hae Lee case but the one that sticks out the most is Adnan Syed. On the day of January 13th, 1999 Hae Min Lee was strangled to death by Adnan Syed with the assistance of Jay Wilds.
This common struggle is portrayed particularly in Ethan Fromes desire to leave his miserable marriage to Zeena in order to run away with his passionate affair with Mattie. Zeena recognizes Ethan's interest in Mattie, ordering that Mattie leave immediately, this causes Ethan to consider running off. While writing a letter to Zeena of his departure, he quickly realize that "[hes] been in a dream, and this is the only evening that [he and Mattie] will ever have together"(56) ultimately because running away would be a hopeless endeavor. Although, Ethan is unhappy, noticeable by his silence that "does not reflect emptiness, but, instead, mirrors veery present but muted morals"(Wendt 158), he chooses that his moral obligation to Zeena is more important. Yet "the facts of poverty and his marital obligation act like prison guards"(Carrol) causing eternal imprisonement in the soul of Ethan.
Ethan’s bad choices of leaving school, feeling lonely and marrying Zeena and then also being avoidant when he wants to leave her. Obviously, Ethan Frome’s tragedy is all caused by his personal decisions. One of many ignorant choices Ethan makes is when his mother gets ill, somewhere in the beginning of the story. During this time, Ethan dropped out of college.
