Introduction There are many different perceptions of health. These include the World Health Organisation, positive and negative views of health. The World Health Organisation says that “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” (The World Health Organisation, 1948). Some people may have a negative view of health. This is when there is an absence of illness, when people believe that they are well because they don’t have any physical symptoms or illness. These people will not consider themselves as ill if they have a cold or a headache. A positive view of health is when a person will look at health assets which may cut down the risk of getting ill or that will give them a healthier longer life. To achieve this they may do things such as going to the gym or eating a healthy balanced diet. Models of Health Biomedical Model The biomedical model of health looks at the physical or biological side of diseases and …show more content…
Needles are placed inside different regions of the body in order to therapize or to help prevent future problems. The treatment is said to stimulate nerves underneath the skin and in muscle tissue, which helps to relieve pain. Acupuncture treats conditions such as headaches, lower back pain, and osteoarthritis and can also help people who are infertile, and those who have anxiety and asthma. It can be available on the NHS in some cases but access is limited. The National Institute for Health and care Excellence only recommends that you use acupuncture for treatments of chronic lower back pain, chronic tension-type headaches and migraines as these have scientific evidence that they work. The Cochrane Collaboration found evidence to say that acupuncture does work. The conditions they found that it worked on were the three mentioned above, nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy, osteoarthritis, neck pain and irritable bowel
Intergrational is a model in which various perspectives such as, psychological, sociological, and biomedical methods are used in diagnosing an illness. (iii). Holistic model an ancient model which focuses on the whole person. Rather than a specific biological issue.
The WHO defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely absent disease or infirmity. The definition was also in the preamble of the constitution in 1948 as
Complementary therapies are treatments that make up a range of services provided by the NHS. Treatments that are available are acupuncture, aromatherapy, art therapy, chiropractic, herbal medicine and homeopathy. These treatments are offered to patients who may have cancer or other illnesses. These treatments are also used to help maintain one’s health, improving the immune system, sleeping patterns, increasing energy levels and help to depose of toxins. In some cultures the inner conception of health is shaped based on the physical measures obtained by health care professional. In health disparities, health issues
(Examples would include; X-Rays, scans, blood tests, ultrasound etc). It is a model of health practised by health professionals, this is associated with the precautions, diagnosis, cure and treatment for disease. It characterizes health as an individual being free of infection or sickness, it is the prevailing model utilised all through the greater part of western societies, and for the most part seen as the only legitimate way to treat illness. However, it does not consider issues such as cultural or social issues.
The definition of “health” means the state of being free from illness or injury. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate from the tree, the ultimate punishment was that we would all suffer for their mistake. However, the disparity that comes along with health related problems is completely unjust. Treatment for one should be reflective of treatment for all.
The Model’s rainbow of determinants shows how various health influences are layered around the individual
The Medical model similarly describes health as ‘an absence of disease’ however, does not consider factors associated with the mind, just focuses on physical illness. (Nettleton, 2013 and Walsh & Tait, 2014). On the other hand, the World Health Organisation defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (WHO, 2015) this can be seen as an interactionist view
Standard medical care is medicine that is commonly practiced by health professionals who hold a medical doctor or a doctor of osteopathy. Examples of complementary and alternative medicine include but are not limited to; acupuncture which would be used with a treatment, and an anticancer diet that would be used instead of treatment. Acupuncture is used to help cancer patients manage their symptoms, treat the side effects left by chemo or radiation therapy, boost red blood cell count, and enhance lymphocyte and natural killer cell activity (“Acupuncture”). This means acupuncture assists the body’s function in stimulating cell activity that provokes lymphocytes to bind to infected/tumorous cells to be able to inject cell killing proteins into them. In the article “Complementary and Alternative Medicine,” it states, CAM [complementary and alternative medicine] therapies include a wide variety of botanicals and nutritional products, such as dietary supplements, herbal supplements, and vitamins.
Acupuncture also works by calming the sympathetic nervous system, which controls involuntary movements in the body such as heart beat and blood pressure. The overactive sympathetic nerves force the heart to work harder and force blood through vessels which are already constricted by nerves. Acupuncture reduces the activity in the sympathetic nervous system which improves hypertension and reduces the chance of developing a lethal heart rhythm. Acupuncture also prevents strokes from happening by freeing the blockages that prevent the blood from reaching the brain. The process of acupuncture takes long-term commitment in order to see effective
These essential amino acids not only work as a natural painkiller, but they’re brain chemicals that can also aid in reducing stress, anxiety, and even depression. Furthermore, massage therapy can also help manage migraine headaches and treat sports related injuries. It can also be useful for people who suffer from post-surgery swelling, muscle spasms, and joint problems, in addition to helping the mind just feel more at ease.
Many people are eager for some new method of migraine relief. More than a decade ago, the National Institutes of Health recommended acupuncture for headaches as a viable treatment modality. More recently, Duke University performed a meta-study to aggregate data from multiple separate studies investigating migraine relief and related issues. This meta-study concluded that acupuncture for headaches is more effective than medication in reducing the severity and frequency of headaches for chronic sufferers.
Shown effects of acupuncture include the activation of the body’s pain modulatory systems releasing relaxation chemicals. The application of acupuncture by a trained professional has been proven to activate the central and automatic nervous system along with the immune system, creating a wholesome
