Chapter One: You Are What You See In today’s society, the media is inescapable. The advancements of technology have led to an even larger outreach of media--touching close to every person. For me, the media has always been an influence in my life. From the songs I’ve listen to, the movies I grew up watching, and the stories I’ve heard, the media has sculpted a significant portion of my identity.
The media outlined our society, national discourse, politics, and especially the formation of lives and emotions of children. The next element is evidence. Billions of people use the Internet daily. The current generation of young people are very familiar with cell phones and Facebook. Read and see what the media presents to them, this translates to believe what they are told and in turn affects their behavior.
The main objectives in chapter 9 include the ways media attempt to influence people’s attitudes, beliefs, and/or behavior, ways media technology can be disruptive and have adverse effects on behavior, the positive and negative influences of certain kinds of media, such as advertisements or reality television programs, on self-image. Even though media is a great outlet, media has changed our generation causing effects on self-image and human interactions. Because of its pervasiveness in American culture, the media affects people in both obvious and subtle ways. Modern media comes in many different formats, including newspapers, magazines, television, social media, etc.
Social pyschology encompases the ideas of social interaction between people and how that affects an individual. Scientific methods are used to understand and explain how the thoughts, feelings, and behavior of individuals are influenced by our social environment around us. Social perception and interaction are vital to touch on when speaking about social psychology. Social perception focuses on how people form impressions and make inferences about other people while social interaction is the exchange of words between a group of people. If we connect this with our presidential election, we clearly see how the media positively and negatively affected the supporters and Clinton/Keane.
Mass media can have an effect on a person perception. It can change the way a person thinks or acts toward other people. Watching a particular movie or a television show can allow people to create assumptions about a certain group of people. Stereotypes are shown through the media in race, gender and social classes (Croteau 192). The people from the Middle East are one particular example of a race that is that is depicted in a negative light.
Why our principal media of mass communication is the TV shows? This is because in our century, people use more TV or Internet as media of information than a physical newspaper (paper). I will focus principally on the constant social criticism that exists on the TV shows. Criticism is the practice of judging the merits and faults of something. The term social criticism often refers to a mode of criticism that locates the reasons for malicious conditions in a society considered to be in a flawed social structure.
Although Karl Marx’s theories of consciousness typically relate to labor forces in society, one can apply his ideas in other realms of society as well. Today, one of the most relatable aspects of our culture is the use of social media. Through social media, one becomes part of a globalized society, one that is larger than ever before experienced. Humans have historically been limited to the kinds of people we interact with. In the past, we were confined to groups of people based on the social structures within our own communities, such as our families, schools, religious and civic organizations, and our peer groups.
The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. They choose carefully what they want to report and by doing so they do not spread lies within the articles but what they choose not to tell the audience. The media shares what the people
It does more than report information and entertainment as it also presents us with views of human beings, events, issues, and cultural life. Therefore, most of the national media are trying to emphasized people by using an attractive advertisement. This is the reason that people are conducted by the mass media for modern culture. People tend to believe in media which lead to culture change. Media’s role, however, is not only to offer news and entertainment but also to transfer and cultivate a variety of social stereotypes, beliefs and values of the society in order to reproduce the order and the already existing formation of social life. In this paper, I shall examine the notion, the types and some important theories on stereotypes as well as their dependable relation with media.
For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. Many Sociologist have examined the different aspects of media influence on society and this literature review will summarize the findings of five different research articles which focus on the effects of media exposure on society as a whole. A variety of issues are explored including, feminism, racism, sexism, and inequality of the different socioeconomic classes.
