The Percentage of American teens in 2015 that were online at least once a day was 92 percent stated by the Pew research. In Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451, the citizens are so accustomed to technology that they do not know what to do with something like a book, so they are illegal. While there are many undesirable effects of technology on teenagers today, there are just as many benefits to teenagers using technology. Fahrenheit 451 is set in “utopian” society where books are illegal and technology is everywhere. Technology is so abundant in this city that most people don’t even know that what they are seeing is not real. There were many ill effects predicted, and some of them became true, including the introduction of a new form of bullying known as cyberbullying. The following is the definition of cyberbullying according to Gale, Cengage Learning, “Cyberbullying is a form of interpersonal harassment that is conducted electronically. This electronic harassment can be carried out in many ways, using a variety of mediums. Abusive messages can be sent to a victim through text messages, instant messages, or e-mail. Cyberbullies can also attack their victims through postings on Facebook, Twitter, or other social networking websites. In some instances, cyberbullies have used these and other mediums to post potentially embarrassing photos or videos of their victims online for everyone to see” (Differences…, 1). Bullying has become an increasing problem because of the use of technology as a means of bullying in addition to the traditional type that many people are used to. The effects of cyberbullying can be extremely devastating to teenagers, as stated in the following quote, “Cyberbullying can be so serious that it has resulted in teen suicide” (Teens and Technology 1).
