The novel is written from a third person objective. This novel is written as a play, so I know that this is third person. Plays are narrated in third person because you do not see the play through one character 's viewpoint. Also the word I does not often appear in the play. The protagonist in The Diary of Anne Frank is Anne Frank. She is the main character of the story. The antagonists are the Nazis. They are the ones who oppose Anne Frank and everyone that is hiding with Anne. Anne Frank is a Jewish girl who goes into hiding during World War Two to escape from the Nazis. Anne Frank is very important to the development of the story. Her diary is very important to the plot of the book. In the play, The Diary of Anne Frank, there are many themes that are presented in this story. I chose two themes that I thought stood out in this story. One of themes in is that you need to identify yourself. Anne explores her identity when she was living in the secret annex. The tension between the war and the personal identity Anne is trying to develop, drives her portrayal on herself. "You could not do this and you could not do that. They forced Father out of his business. We had to wear yellow stars. I had to turn in my bike. I couldn 't go to a Dutch school anymore. I couldn 't go to the movies, or ride in an automobile, or even in a streetcar, and a million other things” (Act I, Scene 1, pg. 8, Anne). Another one of the many themes in this story is to always have hope. The Holocaust was an extremely difficult time to live in, but through it all, the Franks never lost hope. It was hard to keep hope, but through constant encouragement from each other, they managed to stay hopeful, even through the hardest times. "For the past two years we have lived in fear. Now we can live in hope" (Act II, scene 4, p. 119, Mr. Frank). This quote shows how strong the Frank 's belief in
