In Vince Brewton's article "'Bold defiance took its place': 'Respect' and Self-Making in Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," it argues Douglass status as a slave. Brewton feels that the whipping of Hester made Douglass open his eyes about his slave status and wanting to change it. The article in some type of way is really about superiority, many of the slave owners wanted the slaves to know that they didn’t have any power and that the owners were superior. The worthiness of a slave and respect was crucial. This article spoke highly on culture, respect and opinions from the scenes in the narrative. Respect is when one receives power. Respect from a slave to his master was a major big deal back in the slavery days and was often taken seriously. Masters wanted respect from their slaves because they had the power to do that, they held a higher position and the leadership to do it. I think Vince Brewton’s is trying to say that Douglass didn’t have receive enough respect as an African American slave, none of them did. Vince Brewton thinks Douglass wants to put an end to how he was treated as a slave because he wants self respect. Masters basically taught their slaves that they didn’t have any worth and humanity, that’s how he was raised as a slave, to be less than what he is. As a young slave he didn’t know much and that was normal. Masters wanted slaves not to know much of their status so they was quite clueless. Masters kept the slaves clueless so that they wouldn’t stand up for themselves. Slave owners wanted the slaves to know that in fact they were very to the slaves. Brewton points
Throughout Frederick Douglass’s Narrative, he recalls the inhumane acts that were thrusted upon him as a slave, but overcame the abuse of the common practice. Specifically, Douglass since childhood worked in a plantation as a slave, but from him learning to read and write, he escapes and teaches the people of the North the hardships of slavery, where he faced deprivation through exploitation, discovered there were more opportunities for slaves as he approaches the North, and gains power to change of his life due to his knowledge. Throughout Douglass’ life, and in the book, he refers to several different of his “owners” as his “master”. Besides having to refer to people in power to us as “Mr./Mrs.”, or “Dr.”, we don’t typically have to address people in any specific way without wanting to. However, slaves were not given these freedoms. In the book, the word “master” is quoted a minimum of 82 times, which is probably more times than any of us have even said in our lifetime (just an assumption). If you disrespected your “master” in any way, you were subject to being beaten in unimaginable ways.

Group Essay on Frederick Douglass “That this little book may do something toward throwing light on the American slave system”, and that Frederick Douglass does in his eponymous autobiography. Douglass throws light by dispelling the myths of the slave system, which received support from all parts of society. To dispel these myths Douglass begins to construct an argument composed around a series of rhetorical appeals and devices. Douglass illustrates that slavery is dehumanizing, corrupting, and promotes Christian hypocrisy. Using telling details, Douglass describes the dehumanizing effects of the slave system which condones the treatment of human beings as property.

In “The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass narrates in detail the oppressions he went through as a slave before winning his freedom. In the narrative, Douglass gives a picture about the humiliation, brutality, and pain that slaves go through. We can evidently see that Douglass does not want to describe only his life, but he uses his personal experiences and life story as a tool to rise against slavery. He uses his personal life story to argue against common myths that were used to justify the act of slavery. Douglass invalidated common justification for slavery like religion, economic argument and color with his life story through his experiences torture, separation, and illiteracy, and he urged for the end of slavery.
How do issues of race and class impact Caliban and Frederick Douglass? Frederick Douglass was born a slave, therefore he became property, not even considered to be a human being; looked down upon for different appearance/race. As this shows, Douglass was also a slave whom was taught and absorbed the English ways of society, civilization, as well as culture (religion, language, lifestyle, etc.). However, having the same religion was not enough for the slaves to be freed or given the right to own their own territory, the English then decided to make a border line between “black and white” instead of class and culture.
By Douglass stating just how his mistress begun to take precautions of him being able to read, and how furious his mistress became, Douglass brings irony in his writing to convey to his audience that the same woman that provided for the unfortunate and aided the ones that needed it the most… is now restricting a slave from his freedom. Douglass’s Message to Women Frederick Douglass gives many examples of the treatment of women like the following passage: “this is done too obviously to administer to their own lusts, and made a gratification of their wicked desires profitable as well as pleasurable; for by this cunning arrangement, the slaveholder, in cases not a few, sustains to his slaves the double relation of master and father.” (Douglass 1183) Through this passage, Douglass brings to light that enslaved women are raped by their masters because of the master’s lust and the master’s desire to produce more slaves. By looking at the passage in the context of the rest of Narrative of Life, Douglass makes it clear that women who are raped by their masters and birth a child from the rape have it worse than others because of the excess brutality they receive from the master’s wife.
Slavery can easily be determined as one of the most blatant acts of dehumanization. In the narrative titled “Narrative Of The Life of Frederick Douglass”, Douglass is easily able to portray this by quoting, “I have found that, to make a contented slave, it is necessary to make a thoughtless one. It is necessary to darken his moral and mental vision, and, as far as possible, to annihilate the power of reason. He must be able to detect no inconsistencies in slavery; he must be made to feel that slavery is right; and he can be brought to that only when he ceases to be a man”, Chapter 10 page 45. Americans are free to believe in what they want, think what they want, preach what they want, and most importantly say what they want . Authors such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Frederick Douglass, and Walt Whitman show in their texts such as “Self-Reliance” , The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass , and “I Celebrate Myself” that there is no true definition of the American identity. The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass is Frederick Douglass’s autobiography in which Douglass goes into detail about growing up as a slave and then escaping for a better life. During the early-to-mid 1800s, the period that this book was written, African-American slaves were no more than workers for their masters. Frederick Douglass recounts not only his personal life experiences but also the experiences of his fellow slaves during the period.
