- Manifest Technology and the Native American Novel
- http://node9.phil3.uni-freiburg.de/1997/Adams.html
- “In telling the story of technology and Native Americans, it is difficult to avoid the perspective that Calvin Martin refers to as ‘historiographic colonialism.’ It is difficult to avoid, in other words, the European-American ethnocentrism that imposes the ideology of rationalism and quantification on the Native American ‘mythic world.’ However, I think it is possible, perhaps even necessary, to offset this ethnocentric bias by taking up the story from the Indian perspective, that is, from the perspective that appears in novels by and about Native Americans. One result of this shift in perspective is the recognition that woven into the story of technology and Native Americans is the persistent rejection of the ideology of rationalism and quantification, which provided, for example, basic assumptions for the technology of the Industrial Revolution. We have only to listen to two Indian women, one from D’Arcy McNickle’s novel The Surrounded (1936) and the other from Louise Erdrich’s novel Love Medicine (1985), and we can catch the major tone of this rejection.”
