Irene Stewart (Glinezbah, Goes to War With), 1907-

Navajo

Irene Stewart was born on the Navajo Reservation neat Canyon de Chelly in northern Arizona. Stewart was raised in traditional ways by her medicine man father and her mother who was a weaver. She also learned many of the Navajo traditions from her grandmother, after her mother’s death. Stewart graduated from Fort Defiance Indian School in 1922, later attending the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas and the Albuquerque Indian School where she received her diploma in 1929. Stewart has been very active in the Navajo Tribal Council.
