Matthew Sakiestewa Gilbert is an enrolled member of the Hopi Tribe from the village of Upper Moencopi, Arizona. Gilbert received his Ph.D. in Native American history from the University of California, Riverside. Primarily focusing on the history of Indian education and government assimilation and acculturation policies, Gilbert is currently a University Postdoctoral Fellow in American Indian Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In addition to working on various articles and a book manuscript titled “Education Beyond the Mesas: Hopi Student Involvement at Sherman Institute, 1902-1929,” Gilbert is producing a documentary film on the Hopi boarding school experience with Director, Allan Holzman.
