What is One-to-one communication?
One-to-one communication is when two people talk or write to each other. There are no group parties and there are always just two individuals contributing to the method of communication. One-to-one is effective in the fact that it allows care workers to talk to work colleagues, service users themselves and their relatives giving and receiving vital knowledge. For one-to-one communication to be successful, 3 main skills are required. These include; listening, information-giving, and questioning skills. Driscoll (2000) model) consists of three stages (What, So what & Now what) completing one cycle help me to improve my caring practice continuously and learning from those experience for better practice in the future. In order to work effectively with a service user line mangers, colleagues and families you must be able to meet their needs relationships are also governed by body language facial expression smiling and ways in which others listen and talk to you. If the communication is poor between you and a service user and with your work colleague the care the service user receives will not be right for them if you’re not talking to them or communicating with them how are you going to know what they like or don’t like.

Add to this the communication plays an important role in showing empathy and thus it becomes easy for the patient to report positive experiences or even the bad ones. How does poor communication impact on patient safety? Poor communication can lead to injuries and complications through miscommunications and factors that impacts on the quality of care being delivered. Reduced team cohesion which occurs with poor communication is particularly detrimental to patients with chronic conditions as they are effectively treated with different health care professionals.
Communication can be split into different categories, namely • Verbal communication • Non- verbal communication • Written communication Effective communication involves minimising potential misunderstanding and overcome any barriers in the communication process. We make use of multiple communication channels , for example face to face conversations, telephone calls, text messages, emails, brochures etc. Choosing an appropriate communication channel is vital for effective communication, as each channel has different strengths and weaknesses. Written communication is always useful as a way of recording what has been said.
Interpersonal skills and effective communication among healthcare professionals are at the core of quality patient care. Interpersonal skills are defined by Rungapadiachy (1999, p.193) as “those skills which one needs in order to communicate effectively with another person or a group of people”. It includes verbal communication, non-verbal communication, listening skills, negotiation, problem-solving, decision-making, and assertiveness (Skills You Need, n.d.). The National Joint Committee for the Communicative Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities (1991) defined communication as, “Any act by which one person gives to or receives from another person, information about that person 's needs, desires, perceptions, knowledge, or affective states.
For communicating in this situation I should promote active listening and open questioning. This should help me to find out as much information as possible which should lead to a more thorough conclusion. Also clear and concise interaction with other professionals like the multi-disciplinary team is highly important. To solve a lot of problems that may arise when caring I will need to show assertiveness and good advocacy skills.
