When Saul heres of David riling up the troops he sends for him. When they meet David tells Saul that he will fight Goliath so that no other man has to die facing him. Saul does not agree at first saying David is just a youth going up against a man of war since his youth. David convinces Saul to let him battle by comparing fighting Goliath to when he defeated a bear and a lion when they each tried to take his sheep. He tells Saul that God was with him then and that God will be with him when he fights Goliath. Saul does give David armor but David was far too small to wear armor. By the end of the book, one can tell David has given up on hope and his faith in God. The end of the book is where one can see David at his lowest point in life, just as a fifth grader. The obvious conclusion is that David will be killed with a single stroke. Mr. Gladwell points out the less obvious words of the text that give an indication that Goliath may not be up to the task, Goliath’s being guided down the hill, seeing more than was there, (sticks) and because of the outcome Goliaths inability to move rapidly to avoid a projectile.
He uses this piece of evidence to conjecture that Bathsheba’s identity as Uriah’s wife was very important, and, therefore, David’s sin of adultery was equally grave. By the end of the book, David runs away with his friends in protest to his father’s rules and to express who he truly is. From the beginning of the book to the end, David has shown examples of him changing who he is as a person for the better.
