If feeling frazzled by the time you even get to work is an everyday occurance for you, then learning mindfulness habits would be a great solution. Mindfulness can start out helping us in our morning routine and throughout the day. This is a review of a mindfulness self-help book that looks into some topics of interest and how this book can be applied to our lives.
Book Of Choice For this book review I have chosen 10-Minute Mindfulness: 71 habits for living in the present moment by S.J Scott and B. Davenport. I chose this book because I already had an interest in learning more about meditation and its potential benefits. This book focused on combining meditation and mindfulness into our everyday lives rather than merely how to complete a simple meditation practice. My mind wanders a lot, which increases my overall anxiety. I have used meditation apps on my phone before, but I thought this book about habits for living in the present moment seemed useful.
Topics of Interest
To start off, what is mindfulness? According to Scott and Davenport, “It means you become intentionally aware of the present moment while paying close attention to your feelings, thoughts, and sensations of the body” (2017). Whether at home or work, I can make use of much that I learned from 10-Minute Mindfulness. I believe that following some of these easy 10-minute habits will make me happier from accomplishing more with my spare time. If asked how is a person’s lifetime spent, numerous people would think of the times devoted to family. They may reflect of the years of gaining an education, or attempting to find a soulmate to spend the rest of their life with. However, we rarely consider the time we spend preparing our body to continue living our lives. Oddly enough, the time we allow our body to recuperate, through sleeping, is where we spend more than a third of our lifetime; this is equivalent to approximately twenty five years cycling through the stages of sleep, yet at some point in time we all have been deprived of some essential hours of shut eye (Altevogt and Harvey). Therefore, people, in today’s society, often complain of being constantly tired, yet many do not understand the stages of sleep and common problems that accompany it.

When you form the habit of meditating daily, you become more mindful of your environment, and the more aware you become, the more you tend to take note of seemingly insignificant things that could brighten your day. During meditation practise, I found that frequent thoughts kept reoccurring such thoughts about upcoming deadlines or other commitments, which sometimes led me to stop meditating altogether. This was especially made difficult by the number of individuals in the session and how discomforting I felt sitting still for long periods of time. Over the course of this winter quarter, I have learned in my class of Psychology of Wellness how to incorporate mindfulness into my daily life. The definition of mindfulness is considered an art. In the book of the Fully Present, the authors Susan Smalley and Diana Winston transmitted their wisdom on how to learn, practice and cultivate this art. According to the mentioned authors, they defined mindfulness as “the art of observing your physical, emotional, and mental experiences with deliberate, open, and curious attention” (2010, p.78).
