Between the movie 10 Things I Hate About You and the play Taming of the Shrew, Petruchio and Patrick differ on many things. Due to the time period difference, the two have little in common because of changes in the societal expectations. Petruchio is a controlling man that wants Katherine for her money while Patrick is a caring high school student that develops genuine feelings for her. The differences between Petruchio and Patrick mainly stem from their reputation, relationship with Katherine, and how they interact with the people around them. The play Taming of the Shrew is written by Shakespeare, the play is about love and trickery. The movie 10 Things I Hate About You is the modern day interpretation of this play.
The reputation of Petruchio and Patrick differ greatly between the play and the movie. Petruchio is known as a rich man that is thought highly of due to his father’s success, which was common in this time period. Upon meeting Katherine, Petruchio does not hold back, “So let’s cut to the chase: your father has consented for you to become my wife. Your dowry is agreed upon, and whether you like it or not, I will marry you.” (Shakespeare, 2.1.258-261) which from the start he is saying that he does not care if she likes him or not. In 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick builds a relationship with Katherine and puts an end to the payments for taking her out, “Some asshole paid me to take out this really great girl...but I screwed up, I, um, I fell for her.” In the play, Petruchio tries to win Katherine over for the challenge of taming a shrewish woman.
