In vignette number one, regarding the 16-year-old Latina student, there does not seem to be any legal issues, in Hawaii she is above the age of consent (State of Hawaii, n.d.). Ethical considerations to take into account would include collaborating with the student to form a plan, American School Counselor Association ([ASCA], 2010) ethical standard A.1.e, and American Counseling Association ([ACA], 2014) ethical standard A.1.c. It would also be ethical to talk with the student and understand important supportive networks for the student, ASCA (2010) ethical standard A.1.f, and ACA (2014) ethical standard A.1.d. Also, confidentiality would be an important ethical concern, ASCA (2010) standard A.2.d supports that confidentiality be kept, but also takes into consideration the parents’ rights to be involved in the child’s decisions. Also, the counselor should consider the student’s personal values and not impose their own values on the student, ACA (2014) ethical standard A.4.b. For example, the counselor should not advise the student to get an abortion or keep the pregnancy. The student is the main person impacted by these ethical concerns. However, her family and boyfriend may also be impacted. What possible courses of action are there and what are the …show more content…
Potential ethical concerns to consider include breaching confidentiality, ASCA (2010) ethical standard A.7 and ACA (2014) ethical standard B.2.a. Also, the counselor should remind the student about the limits of confidentiality, ASCA (2010) ethical standard A.2.a and A.2.b. Another ethical concern to take into account would include working with the student to form a plan, ASCA (2010) ethical standard A.1.e, and ACA (2014) ethical standard A.1.c. The student and family will be impacted by the ethical standards, and the other student and student’s family if that information is disclosed, will be
In the reading, “(Re)constructing Latinidad: The challenge of Latina/o studies.” it explains the challenge that is, defining what it is to be a Latino in America. In the reading, it gives reasons as to why there is a challenge, examples include how diverse the Latino community is in America and how others in America perceive the Latino community. After reading the article, I saw two main ideas that Aparicio had and they were; redefining what it means to be Latino in America and to show that there are issues in the Latino community that need to be addressed. Then I will provide my reaction based on the ideas I got out of the reading.
This supplement is a record of my actions in this investigation. On November 15, 2015, I was assigned this case to follow up. This investigation involves Ms. Evelyn Natali Hernandez a fourteen year old female Minnie Howard School student. I contacted the Court Services Unit and spoke to Intake Officer Darnell Norman who reported Ms. Hernandez had no prior contact with the Court.
The most important service offered to Latina students at East Los Angeles College is the Latina Completion and transfer Academy. The reason this service is the most important is because of their self-efficacy through cultural relevant teaching and learning, they empower and support Latinas, their main goal is to succeed in maintaining high rate of transferring out members. The academy provides their own courses with flexible hours that members can attend as well as childcare during those courses. They also provide private tutoring and textbooks to ensure the success of members. Their main focus is to have members transfer to a UC or obtain certificates.
Witnessing these two ethical issues have increased my awareness of the legal and ethical standards of the counseling field. I understand the difference between legal and ethical standards and how some situation may not always result to legal involvement. I was able to observe how the staff handled each situation and how the decision/issue affected the patient in numerous ways. During supervision, I practiced using ethical decision making skills and explored how I would have handled each ethical issue differently. I have learned how to appropriately handle situation such as informing an anxious patient of later discharge dates in a way that would decrease the chances of an intense crises.
Psychotherapy Presenting Concerns and Utilization Trends of Latino-American and International Latino Students in a University Counseling Center Every year, millions of young adults seek out higher education through full time attendance in a college or university setting (National Center for Education Statistics, 2013). The number of students who seek out higher education has increased in recent years, as half of the young adult population is enrolled in some type of college or university (Snyder & Dillow, 2012). However, with the increase of students attending college, the demand for accessible mental health services has grown. Students are showing a nine percent rate of utilization within college counseling centers, a number that has remained steady since 2004 (Kim, Park, La, Chang, & Zane, 2015; Gallagher, 2005).
Hispanics/Latinos have been a historically oppressed group in the United States for a large portion of the country’s history. According to the United States Census Bureau (2016), 17.6% of the United States’ population is of Hispanic/Latino origin. This makes Hispanic/Latino individuals the largest racial/ethnic minority category within the country (United, 2016). Despite being such a large portion of the country’s inhabitants, Hispanics/Latinos remain underserved and face discrimination.

Topic: Latino youth in the foster care system Research question: How do the relationships that primarily lead low-income Latino youth into foster care systems initiate. • I used the word relationships because I’m not talking about a relationship between a father and a son or a father daughter relationship. I’m addressing the relationships between the families as a whole. • I used the word primarily because I will be looking into the top three reasons why youth get sent into foster care systems.
I first moved to Texas and in particular to South Texas on the summer of 2001. Immediately after I got here I enrolled for classes for the Fall Semester at the University of Texas Pan American as an international student. On the morning of September 11, 2001 while I was getting ready for class I watched with horror on television, as many Americans did that day, the terrorist attack that unfolded in New York city, as well as the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. At first, the sheer destruction and the astounding amount of casualties was what I remember vividly, but that event will have a direct effect on me without even knowing it at the moment. You see, when I first came here, I came with a student visa, just like the terrorists that boarded the airplanes that were involved in the terrorist act.
The Code of Ethics for Psychologists 3.05 is a little more vague. In l-11 it states “Such relationships include, but are not limited to, members of the Provider’s immediate or extended family, business associates of the professional, or individuals who have a close personal relationship with the professional or the professional’s family” (NAADAC: The Association for Addiction Professionals NCC AP: The National Certification Commission for Addiction Professionals CODE OF ETHICS: Approved 10.09.2016). In the 3.05 it states “If a psychologist finds that, due to unforeseen factors, a potentially harmful multiple relationship has arisen, the psychologist takes reasonable steps to resolve it with due regard for the best interests of the affected person and maximal compliance with the Ethics Code” (Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct.
On the other hand, a teacher who is also a student’s counselor can get very complicated in terms of objectivity. However, as mentioned earlier, there are ethical boundaries and limits to being a mentee. Some ethical don’ts Don’t lend money to the teen.
The Eight Step Ethical Decision-Making Model is about the collective effort between client and counselor and not about the counselor finding a solution for the client or making a decision for him (Corey, Corey & Haynes,1998). This model
Counselors must be aware of their ethical and legal obligations when providing counseling services, such as those related to crisis prevention and intervention. This knowledge can guide the counselor in making appropriate decisions to best assist the client. The American Counseling Association Code of Ethics (2014) provides counselors with the core principles of autonomy, nonmaleficence, beneficence, justice and fidelity to guide them in decisions making. Furthermore, the following ACA (2014) ethical codes are applicable to crisis counseling: A.1.a. Primary responsibility.
For that reason, the counselor should refer to the code of ethics for additional support. The counselor should have ethical and legal considerations when using research in counseling it is for the protection of the client. It is important to know what the population the counselor will be working to see if the research will be effective if there will be any barriers for the client. The responsibility of the counselor is to collect the proper pre and post-test of the client to show a difference when they first started therapy when they finished. It is also important to
One of those most challenging areas I have experience during my current placement is ethical decision-making. We studied many possible scenarios during our Values, Ethics and Professional Issues class, and discussed the various types of decision-making models to help guide us when having to make difficult decisions. While the class was invaluable, because it helped me identify my own biases, and also shed light on how I have made decisions in the past and how I can possibly make decisions in the future, I knew that having to make real-life decisions would not be so cut and dry. This placement has been challenging for me, because my ongoing assignment with one of my supervisors requires constant ethical decision-making, sometimes even in the
