Although certain events caused regression in society such as restrictive immigration policies like the Chinese Immigration Act, the years of 1918-1939 were a period of progress in Canada as there were permanent changes. These changes advanced society, such as developing medicine and health science, women getting recognition in society, and several transportation and communication technological advances. The developments that were made during this time still impact our society today.
Firstly, the period of 1918-1939 was a time of progress in Canada due to women getting more recognition in society and social roles. In the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam, the Canadian team won 15 medals, and six women got more points collectively than any other nation.

For example, in 1921, Insulin was discovered at the University of Toronto, by Frederick Banting and Charles Best. Insulin was a treatment for those suffering with diabetes. Although Insulin couldn’t save patients from diabetes completely, it gave patients a few more years to live as indicated by Leonard Thompson. He was the first patient to receive a dose of insulin, and this resulted in his high blood glucose levels dropping to normal levels (American Diabetes Association, 2019). Their great discovery led them to win the Nobel Prize in medicine. Moreover, Penicillin, a group of antibiotics, was discovered during this time, specifically in the 1928s by Alexander Fleming (ACS, 2023). Although the first dose of penicillin was used in 1941 by Albert Alexander, it was still a life-changing discovery as it changed the lives of many - even after the period of 1918s1939s (Wood, 2010). The discovery of penicillin allowed a lot of life-threatening diseases to be treated, such as bronchitis, tonsillitis, and pneumonia. Penicillin is known to save millions of lives. Indeed, in just World War Two, the death rate because of bacterial pneumonia would go from 18% to 1%, because of the invention of penicillin. (The Oxford Scientist, 2020). This shows that conditions for overall public health improved - because of both the discovery of Insulin and Penicillin. The fact that …show more content…
For example, the invention of automobiles advanced in this period. By the late 1918s, 50% of the Canadian population had access to automobiles. The popularity of such automobiles translated to the creation of better roads to make it more efficient for people to travel (Bondy and Mattys 63). Furthermore, radios had become more popular. The use of the radio expanded the popularity of news, pop culture, and entertainment. It also provided more job opportunities (Bondy and Mattys 63). Also, telephone lines became popular to own during the 1918s. These were joint throughout the neighbourhood and it became easy to listen into conversations (Bondy and Mattys 63). These inventions made it easier for citizens in Canada to live an efficient life. Each of these inventions contributed to advancements in the communication and transportation technology sector today. Automobiles made transportation easier, especially for those who had to travel long distances daily, and radios acted as a form of entertainment and for those to showcase their interests. Telephones caused those from far distances to communicate and were popular as it was a new and continuously advancing type of technology. Therefore, the outstanding progress made during the periods of 1918 - 1939 in Canada serves as a reminder that societal advances - whether in recognition of women's rights,
World War 1 played a crucial role in aiding the movement for female equality in Canada, however, it also hindered it by contributing to the enforcement of gender roles in the workplace. Not one single event will end the constant battle women must endure in all aspects of life, though certain opportunities, such as the job opportunities received during the war, most certainly help women in the fighting of said battle. When numerous jobs were left open by men who were called to the front lines of the war, women were finally presented with the opportunity to work outside of their homes for the first time and provide for their families. Next, generous amounts of awareness of social change were brought to light for women’s contributions throughout
During the war, there was a drastic decrease on supplies and soldiers for the war effort. Men, being sent to war by conscription, could no longer work or support Canada. Women saw these needs and
As well, he was the first PM to include women in his cabinet. In addition, the Royal Commission on the Status of Women was a result of PM Pearson, which examined mistreatment and recommended many changes to improve human rights. In conjunction with social welfare developments, such as the Canadian Pension Plan, a monthly benefit received after retirement, and Universal healthcare, bolstering the availability of medical treatment. WWI and WWII launched Canada into the future in terms of rights and justice, shaping the foundation of Canada’s rights,
Everything starts when the Carnegie Corporation of New York offered a grant to Nathiel Potter, so he could study diabetes and a cure for it. When Potter died in 1919 a colleague
Also, the creation of insulin gained Canada popularity because it was Canadians who found a cure for diabetes. Another invention that was popularized in the twenties is the radio. The listener could change stations by moving the thin wire over the quartz crystal’s surface (Quinlan 58). This was an exciting time for Canadians because the radio was affordable for many. The radio provided cheap entertainment such as the, news, sports, music, and drama, which brought families closer.
They gave women the opportunities to apply for political position and have a career with power in Canada. Women gaining power in politics was a result of women gaining the right for to vote in these years. This gave women a voice in politics; they finally
First, the post-WWI era provoked an equalizing effect on many aspects of Canadian society. The women’s suffrage movement, which was a demonstration to earn the right of women to vote in political elections, also became active during this period. The social right movement for women had existed since the 1870s, but it finally became real in this era. During the war, women took over from the men in work(factories, companies and offices). They hold families together and prepared supplies and food for the men who were overseas.
In 1939, no one thought that women, who weren 't even considered people decades before, would have such a massive impact in the Second World War. Canadian women 's contribution to the war effort, and their role at the home front and overseas had greatly increased since the previous, devastating First World War. The Second World War brought change to Canadian women on an unpredictable scale, though their volunteer work, paid labour force, and their contributions in the armed forces. Surely without the contributions made by the Canadian women, Canada and her allies would not have been as successful as they were. By far, the prime contribution made by Canadian women to the war effort came through their unpaid labour as volunteer work.
As technology emulates growth, the demand for greatness among the American nation cultivates. The 1920s, otherwise known as the roaring twenties can be seen as the decade of new inventions because of the motivations post World War One. The technological advancements made throughout the 1920s developed agape ideologies, creative minds, and pursuits for freedoms throughout American society. Advancements of technology influenced new ideologies throughout the 1920s society. Judith S. Baughman explains in his article, “The impact of technology on daily life”, “This increased availability of electricity and water made possible the proliferation of appliances and conveniences that changed daily life in American society”(1).
Women have shaped Canadian History The proliferation of Canadian women’s movements, notably their redefining role in society, has had a profound propitious impact on Canada’s identity in the twentieth century. The contribution of Canadian women in the cultural life (sports, the arts and dance), the political impact from the leadership role of a female perspective (Nellie McClung) and women’s economic empowerment all contribute to the shape of Canadian history. Canadian culture had become invisible and nearly indistinguishable from the neighboring United States.
Initially, three major advances in technology were made during the 1920s that benefited the United States: radios,
The groups of people that were most changed by these new innovations were factory workers, middle-class urban residents, and midwestern farmers. There were many effects that these creations had on these groups of people. These innovations allowed travelling and the transporting of goods to be easily accomplished, made communication between others simpler and more efficient, and allowed for better and safer ways of lighting to be established. Automobiles allowed for travelling and the transporting of goods to be easily accomplished. The creation of the automobile was extremely beneficial for midwestern farmers, middle-class urban residents, and factory workers.

For big major events, the Great Depression started in the late 1920s and there were many new amendments ratified such as the nineteenth. However, one of the biggest and most impactful events and achievements was how greatly transportation was advanced.
Another major breakthrough of medicine was Insulin. Millions of people in America are diagnosed with diabetes. In 1889, Josef von Mering and Oskar Minkowski had a dog as a research subject and they injected insulin into a diabetic dog which was close to death, as a result, saved the dog’s life. Although insulin is not a cure, but ever since the first discovery of treatment for diabetes, it has kept millions of people
This also bridged to new medicines and treatments for some diseases like penicillin which treats bacterial infections, tail of the lizard medicine for asthma, and blood transfusion medicine that healed cancer and
