Kendrick’s parents got his birth name from honoring the singer Eddie Kendricks, who was the co-founder of the singing group The Temptations. In November 1995, Lamar witnessed his idols, Tupac Shakur and Dr. Dre film the video for hit single “California Love”, which became a very significant moment for eight year old Lamar’s life. At the age of sixteen, Kendrick released his first full length mixtape titled Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year) under the name K-Dot. Lamar’s first mixtape led him to a recording contract with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) which was a newly founded record label based in Carson, California.
