As a Navy Reservist in a top cargo handling unit, I found myself on an airplane more often than I could have imagined. In those 5 years, we traveled to Virginia and Texas numerous times throughout the year for our weekend meetings not to mention yearly trips to places like California, Guam and Hawaii. It doesn't matter if I was away for the weekend or for two and a half weeks, packing made me apprehensive. I knew what I must bring... the uniform and what I wanted to bring... fun clothes.
The book, No Summit out of Sight, written by Jordan Romero and Linda Le Blanc, describes the experiences Jordan Romero had while on his journey to climb the Seven Summits. Realizing his dream at age nine, Jordan decided to climb the highest peak on each continent, and with the support of his family, set a world record as the youngest person (age fifteen) to climb the Seven Summits, even climbing both Mount Kosciuszko and the Carstensz Pyramid, which are topics of debate as to which mountain should be the official summit for Australia. Having read this book and being inspired by Jordan’s dream, I decided to climb Mount Kosciuszko, the shortest summit at 7,310 feet. Stepping out of my comfort zone and pushing away my fear of heights, I got to experience a taste of mountaineering and connect with nature. Mount Kosciuszko was the second mountain Jordan climbed and the mountain I decided to climb.
I used to freak out if the wifi was down, but now that is what I hope for. I do not want to be someone who values material items and technology over interaction with humans and nature. The people in this community showed me the importance of Plato's saying, “The life which is unexamined is not worth living.” I feel that parts of my life have been a waste because I had not examined the world or the life I live. I never want to find myself the way I was before this trip.
I want to go on an alternative break trip to spread my knowledge, experience, and positivity with other members of my team, and the people, land, and environment that we encounter throughout the trip. I want to create lasting memories and friendships with new people in new places, and to learn more about different parts of the country by experiencing them first hand. I know I will grow tremendously as a person and learn more about myself through this experience, while most importantly having a positive
Cultural Crossroads: An Exploration of Identity and Tradition in Joseph Boyden's Three Day Road In Joseph Boyden's novel Three Day Road, the story follows the emotional and thought provoking journey of mainly Niska and Xavier Bird. Niska is a Cree Indigenous person who has strayed from her community in order to keep her roots by staying true to their culture. Xavier, her nephew, was rescued from the residential schools and dragged into war through his friend (also Cree) Elijah. Looking at this story we see that identity is a big theme even relating to the author, there are also other reflections of Indigenous culture in this story like the 7 grandfather teachings and assimilation.
Many people who take trips to other countries use it to escape the boredom of their own life and to have fun in another country. Taking vacations can provide excitement when heading to different locales, give a person the tastes and sights of a new place, and overall provide a sense of pleasure to a tourist. However, there is an aspect of this that many tourists do not get to see. In her essay A Small Place, author Jamaica Kincaid makes this aspect very clear. Kincaid, along with many other natives of foreign islands, believes that tourists are “ugly human being[s]” who seemingly feed off the boredom and desperation of the natives of a certain place, creating a source of pleasure for themselves (Kincaid 262).
There comes a time when you want to take time off of work and put aside the stress and just go on vacation. Somewhere where no one can reach you and you just can sit back and relax. If this sounds like you, you should go on a cruise. If you go on a cruise there is nothing to bother you at all, you will be surrounded by the ocean and sunlight. So you can get plenty of relaxation, and spend time with your family like you want to.
In the essay, “ Why We Take Pictures,” the author Susan Sontag states that photography is not only a simple tool for seeking pleasure but can also be used against anxiety and as tool of power. Sontag emphasises the importance of photography during traveling by stating the anxieties that people can face if they are not taking pictures. First, Sontag points out that people feel disorientation in a new place the uncertainty of what the new place will be like can cause people to panic. However, taking picture enables people to have certain control over the new environments the fact that one knows where he or she is at and where he or she has been, helps individuals cure their anxieties. Second, Sontag indicates that anxieties during traveling can also be caused by the guilt of not being at work.
“Tourism Behaviour understanding includes the idea and knowledge of the different factors which are by no other means very obvious because the effects which do shape the activities and tastes of tourism are often highly embedded in the cultural and the personal biography of the individual that the whole of subject is not known of how actually they were made.” (Seaton, 1996). We get to learn so many things about different cultures and customs. It makes us open minded and gives us a new viewpoint about life and it also changes some of our bad habits.
A memorable day I my life is when I first found out I was a diabetic. I was scared and didn’t really understand what was happening. I was too sick, and for the most part out of my mind. But, what I do remember is a lot of pain and a few visitors. It wasn’t the best day and I don’t remember every detail.
The Most Memorable Vacation A memorable vacation is one that you can never forget. I never thought I would build houses for poor people. It was one of my most memorable experiences in my life. What made it even more memorable was the fact it was my first time to go to a foreign country to help other people build houses.
I am going to be taking you to my favorite vacation spot which happens to be 4,403 miles away from where we live. The only way to get to there is by plane, which is the worst part about going to this destination. The plane ride is around 10 hours from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. This state is made up of eight different islands which are surrounded by the North Pacific Ocean. The place I will be talking about is Hawaii.

In a different environment where no one can really put a label on you, especially if you are alone, it is probable that certain issues or aspects of one’s personality, which would have otherwise remained dormant, manifest themselves, allowing you to be “born again”. In this situation, you don’t live in the past or the future, but in the present where it is almost impossible for you to ignore your inner self, biases, values, and opinions. The thought of traveling alone usually expresses a feeling of loneliness, but in reality being on your own encourages you to learn and understand yourself in ways that cannot be achieved by staying in your habitual territory. This can occur because of many factors including, but not limited to individuals around us and their culture.
