5S SYSTEM IN MANUFACTURING OF CEMENT IN INDIA 5S is a quality environment management tools pioneered by Japan with a focus on five (5) step action implementation that begins with the letter S ' prefix ' aimed management the systematic hygiene practices. Seiri, Seiton, Seiso, Seiketsu and Shitsuke are Japanese words that is simplified into 5S. They can be translated as "sort", "set in order", "shine", "standardize", and "sustain". 5S is the most effective technique for creating a culture of continuous improvement or known as "Kaizen" in Japanese. Shine is an action to ensure the workplace or equipment are free from dusts so that it will not affect the equipment, quality of the products and health of the workers. Shine also focus on cleanliness. Cleanliness is important because this will ensure the workplace is comfortable and safe for the workers. Shine or cleaning must be done daily so that the workplace is clean and tidy. Standardize can only be performed after side activities, stacking, and sweeping have been completed (Patel and Thakkar, 2014). Standardize or maintaining the cleanliness of the workplace is important so that all efforts made in the previous three activities will not be wasted. Guidance is required for the employees to followed. This will ensure a good quality of the workplace and defined its standards. In order to standardize achieved, the workers from the department have agreed upon that everyone should contribute to daily clean-up of the working place. Moreover, in the end of the working week a more detailed clean-up is performed, the performance of which is controlled by a dedicated employee on a week-clean up duty.
