7 Deadly Sins In Dante's Inferno

Dante’s portrayal of Satan shows him to be monstrous and empty as he does not fulfill any satisfaction that is felt if something is missing in one’s life. The thing that is missing in the readers’ lives is God as only God can satisfy our desire. This paradox of Satan by Dante speaks truth as to the fact he is both monstrous and empty. This is an astounding idea to think but it makes sense as he is seen with three heads gnawing on the sinners in the final realm of Hell, Judecca, but is also empty as he is the epitome of sin and, as said earlier, sin is empty and never truly

When Dante reaches the last level of hell he sees Satan, which is very fitting to the contrapasso. The contrapasso either fitted the level and punishment or it didn’t. Encountering satan in the last level fits very well as the punishment. since the ninth circle is the most worse from all the other levels. Only the souls in this level deserve to be in the ninth level with satan, chewing/eating them.

In the Inferno, Dante describes the different levels of hell and the punishment which corresponds to the sin. Dante categorize hell into three major sins consisting of incontinence, violence, and fraudulent. Fraudulent is portrayed as the worse sin in the Inferno while incontinence is seen as a less serious sin. Each category has sinners which have all been punished for their wrong doings in life. The three major sins consist of circles where Dante separates the different sinners.

In inferno, Dante divides Hell up into three major subdivisions based upon the type of sin committed, but two subdivisions that sit apart from the sinful divisions. Outside of Hell circles is the Vestibule, where the cowardly souls who refused to commit to either virtue or vice are punished. The First Circle is where those virtuous pagan souls who died unbaptized or who died prior to the coming of Christ reside. They can’t be saved, but neither are they truly punished in the same tortuous ways that Dante described as those deeper into Hell. Sins of incontinence are punished in Circles Two through Five.

They are here because they did not make any conscious choices. This passage gives very vivid descriptions about how the souls are tortured to give the readers an idea about how goring Hell is and how exactly some souls are punished because of their actions. The Gate of Hell is where everything begins and as Dante goes through each circle, he experiences more taunting from different souls. The following lines continue to give more details about the torments as wasps and hornets continually bite them and they had nowhere to run. This is their home now and they can’t escape from here.

Hell has been an idea passed from the first christians, a sort of boogeyman story to keep those away from societal bads, sins. Although it is described as the worst most gruesome pun-ishment to ever be, the ultimate price to pay with your eternal, everlasting soul, not a soul has stuck the fear deeper than Dante. His extremely fitting, well thought out punishments await sinners in Hell. Each a custom fit for every sin, from Non christians who lived rather virtuous lives being treated to a generic downgrade heavenly castle, to gluttons living in vile self degrading snow, to the most heinous sinners being frozen deep in the coldest ice, the punishments that the tortured souls are forced to endure as reprimanded for their unspeakable acts are

The storm is described as “the hellish hurricane, which never rests, drives on the spirits with its violence” (Alighieri, 78). This storm has an everlasting force consisting of a constant powerful wind, which is a representation of the uncontrolled emotions the lustful have for their forbidden partner. The lustful cry, wail, and lament, “for they have sinned within the flesh, subjecting reason to the rule of lust” (Alighieri, 78). The lustful are never going to be left in peace, especially due to the lives they have affected. These intense feelings that have condemned these characters to the Inferno were because these feelings were unnatural, for example, with Francesca da Rimini and Paolo Malatesta.

The popular interest in the children is caused by the fear of the power of the Devil. If one is touched with the Devil, they are extremely sick, and cannot be bared; “I’d not call it sick; the Devil’s touch is heavier than sick. Dante’s Inferno details the long journey of Dante and Virgil, throughout the bowels of Hell, or the Inferno. Dante’s Inferno is organized into nine different levels, each distributing a different and awful punishment to every different sin. The main sins include the seven deadly sins, “Wrath, Sloth, Lust, Greed, Pride, Gluttony, Envy”, he also included “Treachery” and “Violence”. The three sins that I believe fit their sins would be “Wrath/Sulleness”, “Greed” and “Gluttony”. Within Dante’s Inferno, those with the sin of “Wrath/Sulleness” are either forced to fight each other, as they displayed their anger upon others, or they are forced to sulk within a boiling mud lake for an eternity as the others fight on top of them.

Dante’s Inferno is about a man name Dante Alighieri that goes thru the nine circles of hell. Each circle represents a sin(s) that you have committed and you’ll have to repent for them before your soul completely passes on. Limbo, the first circle of hell is for non-Christians and unbaptized pagans that reserve punishment from within entity of this circle from heaven’s inferno. Lust, the second circle of hell is for the people who are filled with nothing but lust, which means all they want is sexual pleasure, and they are punished by strong winds that violently push them back and forward. It is also one of the Seven Deadly Sins.
