The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey is a self-improvement book. It is written on Covey 's belief that the way we see the world is entirely based on our own perceptions. In order to change a given situation, we must change ourselves, and in order to change ourselves, we must be able to change our perceptions. There is no doubt that we all want to succeed in life. One path to succeed is to identify the habits that can help us throughout our journey. The Book in Three Sentences: 1. Success encompasses a balance of personal and professional effectiveness. 2. Before you can adopt the seven habits, you need to change your perception and interpretation of how the world works (Paradigm shift). 3. Between what happens to you and your response to it lies your freedom to choose that response. The Book Main Five Headlines: 1. Proactive people work on the things they can do something about. 2. Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things. 3. A paradigm is the way we “see” the world in terms of perceiving, understanding, and interpreting. Paradigms are the source of our attitudes and behaviours. 4. “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are conditioned to see it.” 5. To make relatively minor changes in your life, focus on your attitudes and behaviours. To make significant, dramatic changes, work on your basic paradigms. The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: 1. People have been successful repeatedly, but is there a pattern between wildly successful people? Do they have a secret to success that we can’t identify? What these authors believe is the secret to success is through research and observation. Malcolm Gladwell and Marge Piercy believe they have an answer to unlock success through that. In both texts, Malcolm Gladwell and Marge Piercy can agree on dedication, hard work, and purposeful practice are attributes you need to become successful.
This statement rings true in all lives and family structures. When there is entropy, it is impossible for there to be a homeostasis. There must be boundaries that are pragmatic and empowering to those around you and to self. Wes Moore led the readers to understand life choices and cognitive behavior therapy (cognitive restructuring). In every pivotal point in Wes’ life, there was a reconstruction of the thought process, thus; causing the behavior to change.

Stephen R. Covey in his work entitled The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People called what I experienced a paradigm shift. In other words, I learned to see a situation from a differing perspective that caused a eureka moment of discovery—for the better in this
Many people do not realize how important it is to take into consideration the situation of others; a life changing decision could take place within seconds. Apathy is defined by the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary as the lack of feeling or emotion, lack of interest or concern. In today’s society, if something does not pertain to an individual they will not pay it any attention. Many crimes and deaths have gone unreported or have been unsolved because of the apathy that people do not have for one another. “Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn’t Call the Police,” “Who Killed Benny Paret,” and “On Dumpster Diving” are all great examples of apathy.
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new” (Socrates) . Everyone encounters change; it is not an if, rather than a when. People believe that they can change their path or what is happening around them. But, most of the time one cannot. So, they end up with a realization of what is truly important; what they should be doing or how they should be acting..
Due to society, success is mostly viewed as a physical accomplishment. Ivan Chino, National Guard Soldier/NIU graduate, is not only a successful person because of his accomplishments, but more over his work ethic. When asked what makes a person successful, Chino replied, “The road with reaching success comes with many obstacles, but it also involves setting a new bar to achieve a higher form of success.” Clearly, Chino’s view of success is to constantly set high goals, despite the obstacles that come along with them. The reason being is to never settle and strive for a higher level.
The Stanford Experiment demonstrated to us just how powerful being in different situations can affect our behavior. There is a lot that we can learn from this extreme operation but the most obvious is just that: one’s circumstances can hugely alter their actions and their perspectives. But it is not impossible to stay true to what one believes and that is one thing we can learn from this and apply in our everyday
