Black and White Screams, blasts, gunfire. All Sarah Himmel could hear were the cries of those being blasted apart. World War II was well under way. The air was cold and damp, the sky was painted a deep grey. Red and orange flames burnt everything to ashes, and thick clouds of smoke filled the air, turning the sky black. Fear filled Sarah’s mind and she felt the chill of death hovering in the atmosphere. The gunfire continued. She continued to rock back and forth as she sat curled up in a tight ball in the corner of her room. A cold gush of wind blew the window open, and she could smell the suffocating smoke and the metallic scent of blood. Sarah shivered and tip toed over to shut the window and pulled the curtains closed. A big blast made her jump and scream with fear. Her little feet scurried across the cold hard floor. The floorboards creaked as she hopped down the stairs, and she hurried into the kitchen, her cold feet pattering on the wood. She ran to her mother’s side, grabbed her tightly and began to cry. “People are fighting” her mother said, “Its called war.” Sarah didn’t like the war. She wanted it to be over. Soon it would be over. Thoughts started rushing through her head. Her heart began to beat a million miles per minute. She asked her mother, “Why are there wars? Why do they want to kill each other? Why do they want to kill us?” Her mother didn’t know. Tears were spilling out of her mother’s eyes and her voice became uneasy and shaken. Her mother was trying to hide her fear and hold back the tears.
