Inspired by the teachings of Mr. Elijah Muhammad, and though the power of persistence, Malcolm X created his success story. Starting with an eighth grade education, he worked tirelessly to expand his vocabulary; rewriting the dictionary, page by page. Eventually, he was capable of reading complex literature because of his newly broadened vocabulary. Through their writings and speeches, I appreciate the roles they played in the freedom crusade of the 1950s and 1960s. It is a good summary of its essential teachings that give me insight into their individual styles and personalities. The book is not one that tries to force ideas or a religion on the reader but instead offers new insight on two of these most important civil rights leaders of the century. Broadly, Malcolm’s main claim is that knowledge of history is very powerful and can help improve African Americans situation. He supports this main claim with four supplementary main ideas. First, black people cannot understand their current situation and change their future without understanding the past and how they got to that point. Malcolm was born in Omaha, Nebraska and his father was a political activist on behalf of Marcus Garvey. Like Malcolm X when he was isolated in prison, I felt the same emotion of being lost when I moved overseas and could not communicate well with others. This made me the new kid everywhere we went, and books became my escape. For example, we moved to the town of Hamburg, Germany, which is a major port city, and they had a university near where I was living.

Due to Malcolm X’s struggles in his early life, he dealt with an internal anger and resentment towards the white race, which lead to him rebelling and acting out. When Malcolm X was only 6 years old, criminals murdered his father and sparked an internal flame of hatred. His anger convinced him to commit various crimes such as stealing. This acted as a way to rebel against his family and the white community; he would not accept going unnoticed, nor would he accept others as they treated him as inferior. Not only did young Malcolm steal, but he also fought frequently with his family members.
