This can also be seen in his willingness to take chances in the smaller acts that he performed, such as at Vanderbilt University when the audience didn’t leave after the show was over and Steve was forced to improvise what to do. This is another thing that Steve learned throughout his years as a stand-up comedian, to never give up. There are many times throughout this book that we can see Steve having his comedy get dismissed right in front of him.

“The Father” a short story by Hugh Garner presents the protagonist, John Purcell, the father as a selfish, irresponsible, and prejudiced man. During the story when his son Johnny comes downstairs in a pair of flannels and a blazer he seems to show concern as to why Johnny is not wearing his scout uniform, although he is actually concerned as to how this will make him look as a father. As his wife tells him the reason why his son doesn't have the full uniform he wonders angrily “if the scoutmaster thought he was too cheap to buy the boy a uniform” (2). Even though at first it may seem like he cares about his son's appearance the underlying reason for this is that he cares about how this will make him appear as a father and what others

The poem “A Story” by Li-Young Lee depicts the complex relationship between a boy and his father when the boy asks his father for a story and he can’t come up with one. When you’re a parent your main focus is to make your child happy and to meet all the expectations your child meets. When you come to realize a certain expectation can’t satisfy the person you love your reaction should automatically be to question what would happen if you never end up satisfying them. When the father does this he realizes the outcome isn’t what he’d hope for. He then finally realizes that he still has time to meet that expectation and he isn’t being rushed.

In the story “ A Good Story” by Sherman Alexie, a boy’s mother suggests her son writes a happy story about Indians. The boy tells his mother that if she wants a good story then she has to listen. Just as the critic Joshua B. Nelson explains that Sherman Alexie uses irony to get his goal across; I agree that some people are having difficulty understanding the author.
