My involvement in Science Olympiad includes my position as president of the club. As president of Science Olympiad, I am responsible for running practices and supporting my teammates in preparing for their events, all while preparing for my own events. I provide advice to my teammates for how to tackle studying for a certain topic or building a certain system, along with resources to solve problems on their own, and advocate for their needs to the team’s coach. My involvement in math team includes my position as vice president of math team and my selection onto Chicago’s regional math team. I lead my school’s math team by performing well, as evidenced by rankings in the state, and by organizing the efforts of my team.
Throughout Middle school career, I got high marks in science as I found that more interesting than anything else. When I got to High School, I had the opportunity to sign up for Health Science classes to get a jump start on my goals. This was the first time I started to question not choice field, but rather the profession itself. It was the second semester of my freshman year and I was taking a class called Health Team Relations. In the course there is a unit on Career Exploration which consisted of a few guest speakers.
My hard-work, commitment, and responsible behaviour was recognized and I was promoted to Shift Supervisor after a year of working with Tim Hortons as a Team Member. I have also built very strong relationships with my co-workers and employers. During the spring 2016 semester I enrolled in physics II, organic chemistry II, and biochemistry, while also being a student researcher and participating in extracurricular activities. The combination of all of this left me feeling a little overwhelmed and stressed, to say the least, but I found a way to balance it all and still maintain good grades. I owe my ability to endure that semester to my ambition and the supportive community at Spelman. It was ambition that helped me through this difficult semester. My strong desire to learn the necessary material and have a satisfactory grade helped me by allowing me to expend all my possible resources to achieve the outcome I wanted.

Playing the piano, I have developed the skill of performing under pressure without having many problems. It is also a way for me to express myself and release any of the stress I have felt due to the rigorous school courses. While music has taught me very important skills, I feel that swimming is the activity that has helped me practice my communication skills and the idea of teamwork. I understand how important it is to be a team player even though I did not have any major team positions. Being a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol program, I learned more about the idea of teamwork and leadership through practicing and demonstrating my skills as a leader.
I have used the honors program to broaden my knowledge of subjects outside of the field of Science. I have taken a writing course, two communications courses, and even a course about fairy tales. I was a member of the URI Women’s Division 1 Soccer Team during my freshman year and currently, I am a member of the Scuba Club, Surf Club, and Ballroom Dance Team as the current president. Each experience I gained extensive skills working with groups and adapting to different situations. In addition, URI has challenged me to expand myself by completing different courses.
My interest in nursing developed while pursuing a career as a clinical child psychologist. After taking a psychology class as a high school elective and later on moving towards advanced placement psychology, my career path was pointing to the fascinating science of behavior. Having an inspiring professor led me to take the challenge to volunteer at a facility where I could experience children’s behavior during one of the most difficult time of their lives: during times of sickness. At the time Miami Children Hospital gave me the opportunity to volunteer at the Respiratory Unit, which was an experience that changed my life and career choice. The nurse’s rewarding work environment, along with the fast pace, rhythm of the unit made me fall in love with the nursing career.
