In The Most Dangerous Game, Rainsford is a world-renowned hunter who travels the globe in search of new animals to kill. In High Noon, Will is the marshal of a tiny western town. Throughout the story, Will is portrayed as brave, but he also shows weakness in the end. "Then his control gives way, and the tide of bitterness and anger overflow in him. He pounds his battered fists on the desk top brutally, almost sobbing his outrage" (Forman 136).
The temptations cause numerous set backs on the journey, Through this journey, Odysseus suffers great loss. He loses all of his men and succumbs to temptation on numerous occasions. The monsters were worthy opponents and the temptations would be difficult to overcome, but Odysseus never gives up. Faced with insurmountable odds, he forges on and finally makes it home. Victory is near. The finish line chants his name as he crosses with triumph. He has broken yet another record. However, did he win fairly? No.
Ed and Ches both embody traditional masculinity as seen through their rash and bravado-driven actions. As Ed hears of a fight amongst men he does not know, his ego quickly causes him to intervene and fight three men on his own. As the men agree to his challenge, “three Tollivers were down and dead, and Ed Lowe was dying”, (44) an indication of the horrific outcomes of egotistic masculinity as it was Ed’s ego and his reckless challenge that caused his death. Even after being shot, Ed’s ego maintains control over him as he states, “‘We got ‘em. […] we sure did.
He is always looking for a fight like when he sent a letter to Romeo out of the blue challenging him,¨ Nay, he will answer the letter's master; how he dares, being dared¨ (2.4.10-11). Even though Tybalt has his problems he is very skilled as a swordsman, which is an advantage to all the fighting he does. Tybalt is considered the hothead in the story based on his temper and actions. Tybalt is not only a hothead but is a person you can not tell to stop even if it is the right thing to do. This comes to show that Tybalt does not care if you've ever done something to him or not, he is always looking for a fight no matter what and will find a reason to hate for
Throughout the book Atticus faces many conflicts that he handles very well, making him the hero of the story. When responding to conflict, Atticus Finch shows to be a very responsible man. Atticus states “...if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that’s something i’ll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody and i’d rather it be me than that household of children out there.” (Lee Page 218) Atticus knew that beacuse he had humiliated Bob Ewell in court that Bob would be very angry. He knew that
He was also a noble warrior that helped win battles against villains and traitors. Act I Scene II CAPTAIN …The merciless Macdonwald is worthy to be a rebel; and for that reason, countless villains from all over the world swarm around him like insects. He’s aided by kern and galloglasses from the Hebrides, and Fortune… But all was in vain, for brave Macbeth (he deserves that name well) scorned Fortune with his swinging sword, which steamed with the blood of the slain. Like valor’s favorite, he slashed his way until he faced the villain. Without bothering to shake hands with him, or to say farewell, he ripped him open from his navel to his jaws and stuck his head on our battlements.
He goes into a fight prepared for the kill, to “purge all evil from this Hell”(27) not seeking any other form of peace between him and his opponent. For instance during his battle, he is described to be holding Grendel “till its life leaped out” (30), this brutal description shows the violent nature he holds. Beowulf would need to be understanding and have a sense of compassion or mercy in order to be considered a hero in this current society. Possessing the traits of being merciful show that a hero has a set of respectful morals and values which include the ultimate goal for other’s well-being. Beowulf may be considered a hero to some, however in our current time, his selfish intentions and lack of mercy, would lead him to be unfit of this role.
