“A woman with shorn white hair is standing at the kitchen window. She is wearing tennis shoes and a shapeless gray sweater over a summery calico dress. She is small and sprightly, like a bantam hen; but, due to a long youthful illness, her shoulders are pitifully hunched…….. “Oh my,” she exclaims, her breath smoking the windowpane, “it’s fruitcake weather!”( Capote 177). This all describes a women called buddy's friend, she is young in heart but brittle in age, she is a very spritely little old women whose kind, and innocent. In the short story “A Christmas Memory” by Truman Capote. Although she is old she is still and always will be immature and act as if a child.
Buddy's friend is a kind, silly, innocent, childish, elder women who just never grew up. She has been innocent and simple her whole life “when she was still a child. She is still a child.” (Capote 177) This evidence shows that other people also see her as a child. Buddy said this because he is still young, but she is his best friend. This is shown when she buys whiskey with a minor and proceeded to drink and allow the child to intoxicate himself “he words tumbling together into a wrathful tune: “A child of seven! whiskey on his breath! are you out of your mind? feeding a child of seven! must be loony! road to ruination! remember Cousin Kate? Uncle Charlie? Uncle Charlie’s brother-in-law? shame! scandal! humiliation! kneel, pray, beg the Lord!”” (captoe 183) this shows that the leaders of the household are scolding her for giving the young boy whiskey. And hey are warning her about relatives that have done bad in the past, so she sold go pray, also to be humiliated for what she has done.
