Dickens, throughout the novella, wanted to convey compassion—something that many people within the higher-class didn’t fully understand, due to their ignorance of the impoverished classes beneath them. To be compassionate means to be aware of other’s suffering and misfortune; to be empathetic, to pity somebody or something. Dickens definitely wanted to portray this within A Christmas Carol to influence his readers to be more aware of those who were suffering, and to be more charitable.
In Staves 3 and 4 of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge undergoes a drastic change in personality due to the events shown by the Ghost of Christmas Present and the Ghost of Christmas Yet To Come. At the end of the novella, Scrooge is found to be a better man. He learns to be charitable and to value family and companionship.
A Christmas Carol is a classical story that Charles Dickens writes. The reader may have heard of this classic at some point in their lives because of the wide popularity it gained from all the films, plays and parodies that people created based on the story. The author sets the story in 1843 on a very chilly night of Christmas Eve with the main protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge, an ignorant and greedy man who excludes himself from the rest of his community and couldn’t care less about anyone or anything in exception of his money and business. On this cold and frigid night the ghost of Scrooge’s deceased business partner Jacob Marley pays a visit to warn Scrooge in advance about three ghosts: The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future who
Bah Humbug, sometimes people can be a real “Scrooge.” A Christmas Carol has been made into many movies and has been performed countless times as a play. It is a beloved Christmas story and has made an unhappy elder shaped hole our hearts. The 1984 movie and the classic have a lot of similarities and differences.
Many film and literature characters fail to leave an impact on the reader. This is not the case for Charles Dickens’ character Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol and Frank Capra’s creation of a character, George Bailey from It’s a Wonderful Life. Both protagonists are beloved characters, but have drastic similarities and differences. Ebenezer Scrooge and George Bailey are best compared by their outlook on life, time spent with the spirits, and each character’s transformation in the story.
“The righteousness of the blameless keeps his ways straight, but the wicked falls by his own wickedness”(Prov. 11:5). In the Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by three spirits, past, present, and future. When the spirits take Scrooge to the past present and future, Scrooge undergoes a major transformation Dickens demonstrates this by showing that Scrooge changed from a lonely, greedy man, that didn’t like Christmas and dislike people to a generous man that likes Christmas and was more accepting of other people. Dickens shows this change through Scrooge’s actions while traveling through time with the spirits.
In the beginning with Christmas Past the spirit showed him various memories to show him he has to change. For instance, Christmas Past show Scrooge a memory with his old mentor. The spirit showed him this hoping he is shown how he was treated and having him realize how he is so cruel to his employees. Scrooge sees Mr. Fezziwig in the memory Scrooge realizes that that is the type of boss he wants to be. ”No, no. I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just now! That’s all.” Starting to change, Scrooge is on the path of change. To keep changing Christmas Past showed him his Sweetheart, where he lets people he love let go. In the memory with Sweetheart when she left him in reality Scrooge was yelling at his younger self saying “ you fool don’t let her go.” indicating that he is slightly changing. Showing he has a chance of switching
