Even heroes can have a dark side. There are superheroes who can do no wrong, those who are completely pure. Think of heroes like Superman, Spiderman, or Captain America. Yet, there are also heroes who are not pure and can possess a deep rooted rage. Those heroes are people like Batman, and Beowulf. These heroes aren’t evil villains, but there is a reason behind their actions and why they chose the life that they do. Batman’s rages stems from the death of his parents. As a young children Bruce aka Batman watched his parents be murdered before his very eyes when they were held at gunpoint by a mugger. When it comes to Beowulf it is impossible to know exactly where his anger stems from. The poem hops in to him being a hero right after without …show more content…
The characters may not always enjoy being violent and dark, but there are many times where they do enjoy it. I am saying this because of this quote, “So the Shieldings' hero, hard-pressed and enraged, took a firm hold of the hilt and swung the blade in an arc, a resolute blow that bit deep into her neck-bone and severed it entirely, toppling the doomed house of her flesh; she fell to the floor. The sword dripped blood, the swordsman was elated. Beowulf was joyful after killing the beast. He didn’t feel guilty, regretful, or sad. Beowulf only felt pure happiness. After World War World 2 Batman was filled with rage in the comic book world and he pushes a huge statue onto a crowd of Mongols, crushing them to death These were innocent people who’s country just happened to form an attack, but Batman was so upset about the attack he took it out on others. After doing this Batman showed no remorse and felt they deserved it. These heroes are both vengeful and filled with …show more content…
Strength is also the emotional or mental qualities necessary in dealing with situations or events that are distressing or difficult. Both characters possess some immense strength in both aspects. No average person can save Gotham or defeat a killer monster. Beowulf shows his strength throughout the novel many times, but this particular time caught my eye. "Well, friend Unferth, you have had your say about Breca and me. But it was mostly beer that was doing the talking. The truth is this: when the going was heavy in those high waves, I was the strongest swimmer of all." Beowulf is even showing strength when he isn’t fighting off a monster and is simply challenging a friend. This shows that he isn’t just strong when the going gets tough, but he is strong through out life in general. Bruce Wayne shows strength while he is training to become Batman. Being a crime fighter superhero doesn’t come easy. It takes so much strength and determination to keep up with villains with power when you yourself have none. An example of his training is shown in the comics when he is benching a very heavy amount of
He looked into the eyes of the evil forces, who very well wants to end his life, and instead of running away he stands tall and fights valiantly. The Seventh Circle, an evil force who wants to ensue madness by sacrificing the populations of Star City. Oliver refuses to allow this and ensembles a rag tag groups of other heroes to press on and fight against their corrupt ways, until their last breath. Beowulf showed his side of caring by ensuring his people thrived and lived on in his kingdom. He protected the ones who relied on him with all he had, and even faced a dragon to ensure his people survived such a catastrophe.
A hero is a person, typically a man, who is loved for courage, outstanding qualities and great achievements. Beowulf displays many characteristics, but he mainly displays strength, bravery, and selflessness. Beowulf ‘s fanatic future's got him through horrifying battles and never got him to give up. Batman has never given up on Gotham city, even when he felt weak or even when other superheroes did not believe in him. Beowulf and Batman are heroes that are very flexible with things and they share the same characteristics.
Even when comparing him with another run-of-the-mill hero like Batman, his shortcomings are still fairly obvious. Beowulf and Batman are both archetypal characters that embody the quintessential aspects of the epic hero. They both execute a great deal of strength. Beowulf swims for seven days and nights while simultaneously fighting sea monsters. He also displays robustness fighting Grendel when he rips off Grendel
Beowulf first demonstrates his strength when Grendel “was overwhelmed, manacled tight by the man who of all men was foremost and strongest in the days of his life,” causing him to scream a scream described as “a God-cursed scream and strain of catastrophe, the howl of the loser, the lament of the hell-serf keening his wound”(785-789). The poet indicatively calls Beowulf the “strongest” and reiterates Beowulf’s strength with the juxtaposition of “hell-serf” to “catastrophe,” “loser,” and “keening.” This juxtaposition shows that Beowulf turns an inherently strong “hell-serf” into a “keening” “loser” suffering his own “catastrophe,” exemplifying the magnitude of strength Beowulf has. Later Beowulf’s demonstrates his strength again in the battle with the dragon when “the war-king threw his whole strength behind a sword-stroke and connected with the skull. And Naegling snapped… he wielded a sword, no matter how blooded and hard-edged the blade his hand was too strong, the stroke he dealt (I have heard) would ruin it” (2678-2680, 2685-2688).
It however is not shown in the same way. Since Beowulf is seen as someone coming to save the town he is obviously seen as a stereotypical hero. He tries to save the not as capable like every other story hero, they kill the dragon to save the town, or fight the villain to get what is theirs. He looks to be doing the right thing. The heroism however is false because of his intentions.
Beowulf’s power is superhuman, he was the strongest man in the world during that time. The narrator said “Higlac’s follower and the strongest of the Geats greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” (42). The narrator is saying Beowulf is the strongest
Christopher Reeve (AKA the 1978 superman) said that, “A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure in spite of overwhelming obstacles”. Both Beowulf and Modern day heroes are similar in that way in that they fight for the common good of people. That quote from Christopher Reeves on what a modern day hero is, also applies to the epic hero qualities that Beowulf has. Similarly Beowulf and a modern day hero defeat an evil so that good can prevail. Some examples are, Beowulf Slaying Grendel and Grendel's mother to save the land of the Danes, and soldiers fighting enemies that threaten the lives of a country, and police officers putting criminals behind bars.
Beowulf shares the same traits with as many other heroes I know about. For example, Beowulf 's willpower can be compared with Henry Cavill 's Superman (Man of Steel). In Beowulf: "The Battle with the Dragon", Beowulf battled the dragon and he noticed that his weapons started to fail him and that he was weakened by his age. In spite of that, Beowulf 's willpower enabled him to continue fighting the dreadful beast. Eventually, after his ally Wiglaf provided Beowulf with some assistance, he was able to break through and deliver the killing blow to the dragon.
Beowulf makes known that “no man but [himself] could hope to defeat this monster, [and] no one could try.” Beowulf wants to have this fight all to himself, so he can take all of the glory. He is too selfish to conclude that only he could defeat the monster alone. Beowulf cannot be thought of as a hero because “Beowulf only longed for fame.” Beowulf does not perform heroic deeds just to save the citizens, but to receive more admiration from the citizens.
Beowulf is telling us that he doesn’t value the lives of his citizen, but instead values glory and is willing to fight for it. In the end, Beowulf slays the dragon but paid his life as the price. In conclusion, Beowulf would be considered a great warrior, but not a hero. Although Beowulf accomplished many heroic deeds he never did any of them for the right reasons. Therefore, Beowulf is not a hero, but only a warrior who values renown and rewards.
An Anglo-Saxon Hero Over centuries, there has been a lot over different kind of superheroes that have been created. One of these heroes have been called Beowulf. Although Beowulf doesn’t show much of a Modern Day hero, he shows characteristics of an Anglo-Saxon hero. Beowulf shows Anglo-Saxon characteristics by showing us that he has bravery/courage, that he has loyalty to his lord/Lord, and that he had strength.
Alexander Hamilton once said, “There is a certain Enthusiasm in liberty that makes Human nature rise above itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” Beowulf is an epic poem in which the main character Beowulf did acts of service, but he fought for those who couldn’t fight. The overall theme of good versus evil in Beowulf had Beowulf dealing with challenges that no ordinary man would be able to handle unless they were a true epic hero. Throughout the poem Beowulf proves to be an epic hero by his strength, bravery, and sacrifice.
But it was mostly beer that was doing the talking. The truth is this: when the going was heavy in those high waves, I was the strongest swimmer of all." (529-534) 2. Beowulf competed in “swimming contests” with other warriors when he wasn’t battling monsters. II.
Further, Beowulf is also characterized by his feats of strength and courage such as his swimming match against Breca. Importantly, the encounter between Beowulf and the monster emphasizes the responsibilities of men who are to face such challenges while working for the good of the people and not for their ego. Thus, such characters motivate men to be involved in various difficult situations to protect their selves and their community, families and
evil. Beowulf is the archetype warrior hero whose one purpose is to defend the innocent and vulnerable of his people. Whether it is the devil incarnated, the mother of the monster, or a fire-breathing dragon, he is capable of defending the Danes and Geats. Without his heroism and bravery, these people would’ve faced certain death under a weakened, but good, King Hrothgar. Beowulf uses the same selflessness as the military that defends our country, and is as great of a warrior as each and every one of the soldiers in the United States armed services.
